One type of Block Scheduling involves the use of four-ninety minute blocks per day, dividing the school year into two semesters.  This larger block of time allows for more flexible classroom environment.  This type of scheduling also allows opportunities to use various teaching methods. The use of process-oriented instruction is more likely to occur because teachers now have ample time to complete a task within one block of time instead of carrying the activity over several days.

Block Scheduling also has it shortcomings. Some students, including special needs students, may not be able to focus their attention for this extended period of time.  If is believed that this will also lead to retention problems because student have long gaps between learning specific content courses.
