1st / 2nd/ 4th/ 7th Hour-Chemistry What are ATOMS???? What are MOLES???
Chemistry -- is the study of matter and the changes that it undergoes Chemistry Syllabus 2008-2009 Welcome to the system of knowledge known as CHEMISTRY !!!! I hope that you are eager to learn about the function and structure of the atom and about chemical reactions. I will be placing information for you to look at as well as important facts, assignments, review games, pratice test, and links pertaining to the material we are covering. It is here for YOU to use and this site will greatly enhance your understanding of chemistry. Text: Students may check out a textbook as needed. Expectations: 1. The following items should be brought to class each day we meet: a) laptop b) pencil or pen c) notebook paper d) binder for charts, notes 2. You will have bell-work at times for your benefit. This will help prepare you for the days lesson. 3. Missed assignments are YOUR responsibility. See me before or after school and during homeroom. 4. You will need a calculator some days -- I will let you know. 5. All School rules and policies will be enforced. Cheating: Cheating will not be tolerated. If one student asks another student for an answer and it is given, both students will receive zeros. NO EXCEPTIONS !!! If a students cheats in any way their test, assignment, lab will be taken and a zero will be given. I trust you, so don't violate that trust. CLASSROOM RULE: ONLY ONE -- "USE COMMON SENSE" Failure to use common sense will result in detentions and in the event of a severe disruption the student wil be sent immediately to the office. LABORATORY SAFETY: 1. In the chem lab, goggles are the #1 priority !!!! They must be worn at all times in lab, even when cleaning up. -- failure to wear goggles will result in a zero for the lab 2. Absolutely no "horseplay" in lab. 3. Laboratory materials are not for consumption at any time. 4. Attention to the classroom rule is required at all times. GRADING: Weighting System: Grading Scale: Bell-work -- 5% Holcomb High School Labs -- 20% Quizzes -- 20 % Homework -- 15% Test -- 40% Extra credit is available on a limited basis. Extra credit will only be academic in nature !! I will inform the class about extra credit opportunites. BY USING COMMON SENSE WE WILL HAVE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT, HAVE KILOLITERS OF FUN, AND YOU WILL LEARN MORE THAN YOU COULD HAVE IMAGINED ABOUT CHEMISTRY !!!! Course Outline: 1st 9 weeks -- Lab safety, measuring and calculations, sci notation, metric conversions, periodic table, chemical properties 2nd 9 weeks -- Chemical names and formulas, types of chem rxs, balancing rxs, mole concept 3rd 9 weeks -- % composition, empirical formula, Stoichiometry, gas laws 4th 9 weeks -- Making solutions, Atomic structure, acid and bases, Chemical bonding, Oxidation and Reduction rxs, Fission/Fusion rx's
