Professionals have long known that individuals diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder can be some of the most challenging clients to help. Individuals with BPD can be very sensitive to perceived criticism and rejection, and react strongly to others through verbal and at times physical retaliation. Their feelings about others often shift dramatically and can range from idealization to contempt. Self-image can also change rapidly from extremely positive to extremely negative, and many of these individuals also have other mental health concerns like substance abuse and mood disorders as well. This portion of the series will identify what scientific advancements have to teach us regarding etiology of this difficult disorder.
Objectives:
- To briefly identify the current research regarding the etiology of a personality disorder
- To identify the current genetic, biological and psychological research regarding the etiology of borderline personality disorder
- To provide resources for further study
