Happy June!! It's hard to believe the year is almost over!

Eighth grade class period C has recently completed  "Getting Away with Murder:  The True Story of The Emmett Till Case".  In this accurate historical account of a murder case from 1954, author Chris Crowe describes the tumultuous event which led to nation-wide coverage of a murder trial of 2 white men put on trial for  murdering 14 year old African-American Emmett Till from Chicago.  The material in this book is mature, and the vocabulary challenging.  This class did a wonderful job responding to what they read.  Their essays are on display in my classroom, and they have them saved online.  They will bring home a paper copy to share with parents. The students did a remarkable job of capturing the importance of this event.
Eighth grade period G has now begun this book, and we will continue it after their trip to Washington D.C. The students are reading "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee in English class.  This non-fiction by Chris Crowe helps to expand their knowledge and understanding of the climate in the southern states in the past. Eight G has finished "The Cheat", by Amy Goldman Koss, and they have written inspired essays responding to the book, and the situations presented.  These excellent essays are on display in my classroom, and the students have them saved online.  They will bring home a paper copy at the end of the term.

Grade 7  students have just finished a wonderful book called Racing The Sun, by Paul Pitts.  This winner of The Parents' Choice Award is about a teenage boy who becomes acquainted with his Navajo grandfather near the end of his life.  It has a wonderful theme about being true to yourself.

Grade 6 is nearing the end of The Shoeshine Girl by Clyde Robert Bulla.  This novel has some interesting pre-teen situations, and teaches the importance of hard work and honesty.

Please remember I have many wonderful books to borrow on my own personal library shelves.  All students should have a personal reading book at all times.  They have (2) 20 minute periods each week devoted to silent reading.  They should also continue to read at home, even if it is just for 10 minutes a day. Just stop by my room any time for a new book or magazine.
I have current and past issues of ACTION and READ magazine, and these can be accessed online from this web page.
