Design a Brazilian Vacation
A Role Performance
In this task, you are seeking to design and plan a vacation to Brazil for a family of four that will satisfy each member’s various interests while also giving them various
opportunities to learn about the various aspects of Brazilian culture.
You are to act as a family of four that is planning a 14-day vacation to Brazil.
There are four members in your family who have different interests:
A father: loves loves soccer; likes cooking and is interested in learning how to make churrascos; really wants to see a soccer game and to SCUBA dive.
A mother: loves the outdoors; dancing; photographing famous Brazilian sites; really wants to see the Amazon rain forest.
A 12 year-old child: interested in martial arts; loves parades and geology; really wants to see kayeipo dancers.
A 9 year-old child: loves animals; architecture; really wants to see how chocolate is made and buildings by Oscar Niemeyer.
As such, you are expected to research Brazil and plan the family’s vacation. You will research the people, climate, economy, culture, geographic features, language, heritage and leisure activities. Your group will incorporate individual interests and desires into the vacation plans so that each member of the family is satisfied.
Compromise will be necessary.
For this project, you will be expected to:
1. Assume an assigned role.
2. Research and discover places to visit and things to do in Brazil that will satisfy your various interests.
3. Begin by researching and making a list of everything that your character would
like to do on a Brazilian vacation. Be sure to keep track of the materials you used to
find your information.
4. Order your list from favorite to least favorite.
5. Meet as a group. Create a group list of activities for the family to do. Compromise
will be necessary.
6. Work together to plan the family’s itinerary. You will then put it into the
computer using TimeLiner.
7. Search for images on the web, in books, magazines and travel brochures that will
match your family’s activities and destinations. You will incorporate these as well as
other images that we have created into your itinerary.
8. Create a map using Mapmaker’s Toolkit that will show your family’s route of
travel in Brazil.
Challenges you may encounter are:
1. deciding how to organize your family’s vacation
2. finding information to meet each family member’s various interests
3. resolving creative differences with your family members
4. knowing how to access information and conduct searches on the Internet
5. putting information that you find into your own words
6. knowing how to use software programs such as TimeLiner and
Mapmaker’s Toolkit
Resources you can depend on are:
1. The Internet (will provide various web sites)
2. CD-Rom Encyclopedias
3. Encyclopedias
4. Magazine articles and informational books available on Brazil
5. Digital cameras
You will need to:
1. work cooperatively and collaboratively with your teammates
2. decide how you are going to share the work
3. decide a design for your itinerary and what images should be included in your
itinerary and slide show
4. make sure that you understand how to work in TimeLiner and
Mapmaker’s Toolkit
5. create a “paper” version of your itinerary before you will be allowed to work on
the computer
