Know the difference between Early christian, Romanesque
  and Gothic churches.
      Early Christian - basilica plan

      Romanesque - pilgrimage plan
                 - accomodate flow of pilgrims visiting
                        relics
                 - looks roman - small windows,
                        rounded arches, barrel vault

                 - exterior story-telling relief
                   on the portal (tympanum)
                 - church militant - harsh message
                 - story-telling capitals
      Gothic - pilgrimage plan
             - pointed arch, cross vaulting, flying
                   buttresses
             - stained glass story telling

             - sculpture everywhere
             - vertical lines
           

Justinian & Court -
  Apse mosaic showing the mass & showing how mass was
  separate for men & women.(He's holding the bread)
  Shows how Justinian waspowerful controlling the army,
  govt & the church.
  His power was derived from God (divine right) as shown
  by the chi-rho, halo & his purple robe.
  Early Christian period stressed the heavenly with
  gold and glass tesserae that glitter.(reflect light)
  It appears flat,
  no atmospheric perspective, no shading in the drapery.
  THere is no contrapposto, no foreshortening (thus,
  figs.are stiff, tippy-toe & floating)
  There is no variety-all showing same pose, everyone
  frontal.
