bylaws Mr. Murphy
Bawlf School TLC Lead Teacher

Welcome to the Bawlf Grade 6 Bylaw Debate Web Page.

The purpose of this page is to give students the opportunity to discuss, debate and vote on various bylaws and laws that are covered in the grade six social studies unit, "Local Government".

Bylaws/Laws

1.  All children under the age of 14 must be home by 10:00 (curfew)

2.  Parents are responsible financially for any malicious damaged caused by their child

3.  Roller blading and skate boarding are prohibited on all public sidewalks.

4.  Smoking should be banned in all restaurants.

5.  Helmets must be worn on all public skating rinks

6.  All cats and dogs must be licensed

Possible Procedure:
1. Divide the above bylaws among your class and tell students that they must either support or reject the proposed law.  (State an opinion and support it with 3 or more reasons)
2.  After writing their proposal, they can present it to the class.
3.  Then, using a secret ballot, students can vote "yes" or "no" for each bylaw
4.  The information can be tabulated and placed on a spreadsheet for graphing and other math applications.

The purpose of this projects is to have students from across the region or province share their views about laws that effect them and be able to statistically view the responses in other places.

Time Saver Procedure:
If time is a problem, I would appreciate if you could simply discuss the bylaws with your class and take a quick survey of the results and email me the data.(click "Send e-mail" above). I would then place the results of your school on our web page.  Please include school name, bylaw and results.  My hope is to have data from a number of schools displayed for all to use and interpret.

The web page you are viewing is very easy to create, and I encourage participating schools to utilize it if you do not already have a web page.  Simply click the "create your own class page below".  You will be able to post results and comments of your class discussions for everyone to see.
