In the year 2000, Governor Davis signed a law to create a holiday on the birthday of Caesar Chavez, March 31, 1927, to honor his life and work. Chavez was a union organizer. He organized the migrant farmworkers, mostly immigrants, for the first time. He greatly improved their lives and working conditions and made the American public aware of their problems.
