Thank you for supporting your child’s education. Our last round of conferences will be this Wednesday night. Students are invited to attend as well! **Please be sure to visit our class website to practice spelling, reading, science and math facts this week. To access it go to: http://www.southwestschools.org, click on Crosby Elementary, click on Teacher Webs (on the left side of page), select Mrs. Hursh or Ms. Knock. The site is the same for both. Language Arts Reading- Our study of figurative language will wrap up this week, although we will continue to look for similes, metaphors, idioms, and hyperbole in our reading and writing. These figures of speech make reading and writing much more descriptive and enjoyable. We will have a short figure of speech quiz on Tuesday, and students can play games on the class website for additional practice. Later in the week, we will read John Henry, a tall tale filled with hyperbole, similes, and metaphors. The 5 point AR reward for February will be Game and Snack Time with friends. On March 2, those students who earned 5 points or more for the month of February will be allowed to bring in their favorite game and snack/drink to enjoy with friends. I hope students are working hard to achieve this fun goal! Writing/Grammar- The grammar skill this week will be distinguishing between common and proper nouns, as well as reviewing the rules for pluralizing nouns (when to add –s or –es). In writing, we have noticed several students are having problems with run-on sentences. Therefore, we will focus on identifying these problems and how to fix them by either inserting a period, or turn two short sentences into a longer compound sentence with a comma and a conjunction (and, but, or). Spelling- No list due to the short week. Math Social Studies Science Physical and Chemical Changes test will be coming home today. Please review this with your child. This week we will continue learning about the water cycle, focusing on evaporation, condensation, precipitation, surface run-off, and transpiration. Later in the week, we will begin learning about how clouds are formed and the four main types of clouds (cirrus, cumulus, stratus, and cumulonimbus). We will learn what they look like, where they are located in the sky, what they are made of, and what type of weather they bring.
