2014-2015 Band Handbook
Every student is issued an E.B. Stanley Band Handbook at the beginning of the school year. All grading policies, general band information and most dates of events are included. Come by the Band room any time to pick up another if needed.

Course Description
Beginning Band: Students learn to play their chosen instrument using Essential Elements book I as the primary method book. The 6th grade band will prepare for the Christmas concert as well as a concert in the spring. Upon successful completion of beginner band, the students will be eligible to move on to Intermediate band offered in 7th grade.

Class Expectations
Students are expected to arrive to class with their respective instruments and all other materials. Students MUST bring a pencil EVERY DAY to class. Students will begin learning articulations, performing scales, and performing music at a beginning level of difficulty. Ensemble skills will become more developed as students participate in full band settings. The 6th grade beginner band is split into two sections: 6A - Brass & Percussion & 6B - Woodwinds. We will use the Essential Elements Book I as our method book to deliver instruction supplemented by various scale sheets, music vocabulary lists, and counting worksheets.

Assignments
1. Scales
Students should be practicing ALL of their Scales as they are learned throughout the year.
These will be played individually for a grade.
If all scales are memorized , the student will receive extra credit and a PIZZA PARTY at the end of the year!

2. Practice Records
Each student is graded on their homework. Homework in band is practice on their instrument. 100 min. per week= a grade of 100. Additional minutes will be counted as extra credit.
Once Practice Records are assigned, they must be turned in each week. Practice Records turned in on Monday or Tuesday will receive full credit. Five points will be deducted from Practice Records turned in on Wednesday. Five more points will be deducted on Thursday and five more on Friday. A parent or guardian must initial the Practice Record weekly to verify minutes practice.
