The story of el/la
Nouns
Los sustantivos

   1.  Nouns refer to persons, places,
   things, and concepts.
  2.  In Spanish, all nouns are either
masculine or feminine.  They have gender
   3.  Nouns that end in -o generally are
masculine.  Masculine nouns use the art-
   icle  “el”.
   4.  Nouns that end in -a are generally
feminine.  Feminine nouns use the article
   “la”.
5.  Nouns that end in -dad or ción are
most often feminine.  They use the
    article “la”.
    6.  Other nouns have no clues.  They
end in other letters such as “e”, etc.
    Just memorize them with their
appropriate articles to learn their gender
     7.  Some nouns are irregular.  I usually
indicate them with  *  next to them
  8.  The  “el” and the “la” are called
definite articles.  They mean the word
“the” in English.  However, in Spanish
one usually uses the articles even if the
      word “the” is not said.
    9.  When using a noun that refers to a
person, use the gender of that person
      to determine the article.

NOTES CAPITULO 6

Direct Object Pronouns
1.   Pronouns replace nouns.
2.  Direct objects are nouns that receive the  action         of the verb.  Yo compro LA ROPA
                       I buy CLOTHING.
3.      Instead of saying “I buy clothing”  one can
change the noun clothing into “it.”
        “I buy it.”
4.  In Spanish, direct object nouns are changed in
the following way:
Masculine Singular   becomes= lo   It                       Feminine Singular becomes= la     It
        Masculine Plural becomes=los       Them
        Feminine Plural becomes=las         Them

(The pronoun must agree
with the noun it replaces.)
5.  Direct object pronouns are placed before the
conjugated verb.                                   6. Examples of usage.
¿Buscas la escuela?         Sí, la busco.
¿Llevas los tenis rojos?     Sí, los llevo.
¿Tienes el lápiz?            Sí, lo tengo.                 ,
¿Deseas las camisetas?       Sí, las deseo.
7.  In negative sentences, the “no” goes in front of
     the  direct object pronoun.
Ex.  No, no los quiero. No, I do not want them.
