I have learned a lot this semester in my Ethnic Studies class. We learned about topics such as Hip Hop culture and the Harlem Renaissance but the topic that intrest me the most was censorship.
I think the topic of censorship interest me the most because it is everywhere. The first amendment gives us the right to free speech. Censorship is taking our civil liberties away. Censorship is in music, it is in literature,it is in art and it is even in television/movie industry. Book Banning and parental advisory stickers are restrciting artist from full artistic expression. How far is too far. Artsist in the music idustry of today have strict guidlines in which they can express thier self. Why should we all suffer because the parents of America are not doing their jobs. Think about it! The reason why we have ratings on T.V and in music is because parents are looking to the government to do thier job. Senators and governers should not be raising the children of America. If a parent does not want thier child to listen or watch something, then turn it off. What one person consideres wrong another might not.
Artist like Eminem and Lil Kim are pushing their limits. The qusetion is, who gets to judge what is art and what is smut. I think it should be up to the American people to judge for themselves;not middle aged judges that do not understand the youth of today.I think that the youth of today should have the final judgement on censorhip. We are the ones listnening to the CD's, reading the books and watching the movies.
