At the completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

  • Identify the parts of an atom.
  • Know how to read a chemical symbol.
  • Identify atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds.
  • Use a periodic table to determine the number of orbitals in an atom.
  • Use a periodic table to determine the number of electrons in the outer orbital.
  • Use a periodic table to determine the number of protons and neutrons in an atom.
  • Distinguish between covalent and ionic bonds.
  • Distinguish between a chemical reaction and a physical change.
  • Be able to state the Law of Conservation of Mass.
  • Distinguish between balanced and unbalanced chemical equations.
