Mrs. Chilton’s Algebra I Classroom Rules
and HW & Grading Policy 2009-2010

Each day students should

1.  Bring 2 pencils, binder with loose leaf paper, covered math textbook, pen, and a calculator to class daily.  No spiral or bound notebooks!  Pens may not be black, yellow or silver.

2.  Before the bell rings, place your homework in your class’ tray, and sit in your seat, ready to work.

3.  To receive credit on homework, write the problem on loose leaf paper using a pencil, show work, and write the answer.

4.  Raise your hand to receive permission to speak.  Always speak and act politely.

5.  Keep your area clean.

6.  Follow the school rules in the student handbook.

                     Algebra I Grading Procedure

Grades for Algebra I are based on a weighted scale of 20% for assignments and 80% for tests and quizzes.  In detail, weighted 20% are

(1) assignments/homework (20 points each, based on completeness and reasonableness )

(2) maintaining Grade Sheet (100 points each 9-week period and requires parent signature at progress report time)

When an assignment is not brought to class (not done, lost or left elsewhere), one Math HW Pass per nine-weeks may be turned in for 20 points when the assignment is due.

In detail, weighted 80% are

(1) six to eight quizzes on recent math lessons (20 points each)

(2)  two or three notebook quizzes (20 points each)

(2) about 4 tests (100 points each, including a multiple-choice comprehensive test)

(3) some nine-weeks may include an outside-of-class project (50 points)

During the ninth week one Recognition Card may be turned in for five (5) bonus  points towards test & quiz total points.  One or two Math Passes may also be turned in for 3 points each towards test & quiz total points.

Progress reports will be available on STI on the following dates:  Sept. 9, Nov. 10, Feb. 3, and April 14.  I will try to post grades every week.  If you have any questions, please call me through the school office at 402-5350 or e-mail chiltonnm@vestavia.k12.al.us .

Please carefully read my homework policy on next page, paying attention to check-in/out and planned absences procedures.

                       Policies and Procedures Regarding
Homework and Absences for Algebra I with Mrs. Chilton

1.  Each assignment given in the first semester is worth 20 points based on effort in writiing each problem and showing appropriate work in answering.  Homework is practice and some incorrect answers are expected.  Therefore, the assignment is graded not on accuracy, but according to completeness and reasonableness of work.  Possible scores include

No name:  zero (0) points, whether completed or not
Name written, format good, and 100% attempted:  20 points
Name written, format good, and 80 - 99% attempted:  15 points
Name written, format good, and 60 - 79% attempted:  10 points
Name written, format good, and 25 - 59% attempted:    5 points

2.    Late homework is not accepted.  Lost homework, homework left at home or in a locker, or homework not completed because of a non-emergency event will not be accepted at a later time.  A NO HW sheet  must be completed for each missing assignment.  One Math HW Pass per 9-week period may be turned in for a late or incomplete assignment at the time the assignment is due.  The pass must be stapled to the incomplete homework paper or to a “NO HW” sheet.

3.  A student should not ask other students for materials after the tardy bell!  Mrs. Chilton will provide missing materials.

4.  Students who check-in or check-out during the day are not absent unless they have missed a half-day or more; therefore, homework is due as scheduled.  Students are expected to get class notes and assignment before checking out and leaving school, or after checking-in later that day.

5.  A student is not absent when attending a school-related activity, such as band or choral competitions or other field trips.  Assignments are obtained before the trip and are due as assigned if the student is on campus for any part of the school day.  For example, if the field trip departs during 2nd period for a one-day trip, the assignment is turned in before departure.  For an extended trip, such as the band spring trip, the assignments are due upon return to class.

6.  Make-up homework is accepted for excused absences per school policy:  2 days to complete and turn-in homework for each day absent.  Make-up work should be given to the teacher every two days (do not wait six days to turn in all work for a 3-day absence).

          When returning from an absence,
         (1) check the folder for papers;
         (2) complete 2 copies of the Absence Sheet using the information on the assignment board; and
         (3) give Mrs. Chilton your admittance pass (parent note required), any work due on first day of absence, and the 2 Absence Sheets.

Mrs. Chilton will sign and return the admittance pass and one absence sheet with your due dates for make-up work.  Turn in make-up work to Mrs. Chilton (not the HW tray) every 2 days or sooner.  Mrs. Chilton will record the paper and return it with its key.  Please make arrangements for help if you do not understand the work.  Long range assignments are due on schedule.     Students absent only on a test day will be expected to make-up the test on the day of return before school, during homeroom, 8th period, or after school.  Make-up tests are not given during regular class time.

7.   During an extended absence, assignments can be found on the Homework Page on the Internet (Pizitz homepage at www.vestavia.k12.al.us/pizitzmiddle to Faculty to Chilton).  If worksheets are assigned, either call to have them waiting in the office for you to pick-up or have a friend get them.  When a student returns from an extended absence, we will together decide on appropriate help (from the teacher, academic support, peer tutor, or no one if help is not needed) and due dates.

8.  Planned absences, such as family trips, require three days prior approval from Mr. Miles to be excused (school policy).  Assignments are obtained before the planned absence and due upon return to class.

9.  A Math Pass may be used to leave the classroom to go to the restroom, water fountain, or  locker.  Unused math passes may be turned in for bonus as described in the grading policy.

Please remember that textbooks are to be covered at all times.  You may purchase non-adhesive book covers or make book covers using brown grocery sacks or other heavy paper.
