Did you know that you can write a Book Review for your favorite library books?
Student and staff recommendations are the best source for finding great books to read in our library. Look for the gold stars in a book's catalog entry to find book reviews created by our students and staff. All reviews are submitted through your Destiny Library account. (Mrs. Grummer must approve all reviews before they appear in the catalog. Only students' initials will appear on the review.)
Follow the instructions below to submit a review:
Login to your account with your username and password.
Search for your favorite books in the Catalog tab.
Click on the title you want to review.
Choose the Reviews tab on the right side of the page.
Click on Add Review
Answer the question: How do you rate this title? Choose the STAR rating that you believe the book deserves.
Click in the box underneath Enter your comments below… and enter your review. Please make sure you have checked your grammar and spelling before clicking the SAVE button.
If your review hasn't appeared on your book after a week, you can stop by the library and ask Mrs. Grummer to look at the review with you.
What does a good book review look like? Read this great review one of our students wrote for Mercy Watson Thinks Like a Pig:
"Mercy Watson is a fun, silly pig and she has very humorous adventures. I have enjoyed reading all of these books; however out of all of them I think this one is the funniest."

In January of 2003, Christ the King began using the Accelerated Reader testing program. Below you will find information about the different elements of this reading program used with our first through seventh graders.
Two or three times a year the STAR reading test is given to the students. STAR is a computerized test that accurately assesses the reading levels of students, and measures growth throughout the school year. By taking the 10-minute test it helps to quickly determine each student's zone of proximal development (ZPD). This defines the reading level range from which the student should be selecting books in order to achieve optimal growth in reading without frustration. The ZPD reading range is approximate.
A student uses his/her ZPD to choose books to read for the Accelerated Reader program that is part of our reading program in grades 2 through 7. Accelerated Reader (AR) developed by Reading Renaissance, is a computer software program that helps teachers manage and monitor students' reading growth. A student simply picks a book at his or her level and reads it at his or her own pace. When finished, the student takes a short quiz on the computer. Accelerated Reader gives both student and teacher feedback based on the quiz results, that the teacher then uses to direct ongoing reading practice.
Our new Destiny online catalog makes finding just the right level AR books easy. Choose to do an AR search using the book levels suggested by your child's teacher to find all the books in that level in our library. Then create a list together with your child that can be used to check out those books during their library skills class period. Check your child's RenWeb schedule to see which day is their Library Skills Day. Send a list of the books your child would like to checkout from the library. The students can keep the lists in a table folder that stays in the library and then search for the books as they visit each week.
Our library uses AR Enterprise which gives us access to all the quizzes Renaissance Learning has ever made!!! In our library, books with an orange label over the spine label have an AR quiz. The level of the book is on the inside cover. A student can take a quiz on the computers in their classrooms or on the computers in the library since our computers are networked.
Please note that S.T.A.R. and Accelerated Reader are only a piece of the reading instructional programs at Christ the King. If you have any questions or concerns regarding S.T.A.R. or the Accelerated Reader programs, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher or Mrs. Grummer. Just like you, we want your child to be happy and successful!
