Course Description:
In Creative Writing, students will begin by expanding on previous knowledge of prose and poetry. After revisiting foundational knowledge, students will experiment with novel methods of storytelling and expression. Students will be asked to share their work with the class for critiquing and improvement. Students will also read and critique the works of famous authors, poets, and playwrights. Students will learn linguistic and rhetorical techniques, such as sensory words and metaphorical writing. They will also explore major themes and utilize symbolism while practicing the art of composition in several genres, including fiction, science fiction, and mystery. Prose, poetry, and playwriting/screenplays will be included.
Works from this course may be used in the Creative Writing folder for Abingdon High School, as well as for inclusion in the literary magazine Wings.
Student Expectations:
Students are expected to:
-attend class everyday
-complete assigned tasks (including analysis of famous works)
-ask questions about what they don’t understand with the material
- treat each other with respect
-accept responsibility for their success in learning
- be kind, constructive, and respectful in providing criticism for others’ works while exercising the same courtesy accepting criticism for their own work
Grading Policies:
Daily Assignments are worth 100 points.
Quizzes are worth 200 points (100 x 2)
Tests and Projects (both personal and group) are worth 300 points (100 x 3)
