Consumer products can give evidence of cultural diffusion.  By studying items found in a home's cupboards and closets, students can uncover information about cultural heritage and cultural influences in their daily lives.  This lesson will help our students identify the prescence of different cultures in their world and help them understand the concept of cultural diffusion.

Grade level:  5 - 8
Classroom Duration:  Two to four hours.

Materials:  Maps, consumer items from student's homes brought to class in opaque bags; colored pencils.

Development:
1.  Number each bag and then number and letter each of the items in the bag.
2.  Divide the students into groups of four or five.  Exchange bags among the groups so that every student has another student's bag.
3.  Have the group open the bags one at a time and examine the items they contain.  Students should note their best educated guess at the place of origin (which may not be the same as the site of the manufacturer!) for each of the items in the bag.

Assessment:
Each student should write a summary reflecting a personal understanding of cultural diffusion and how products in their homes can enlighten them to diffusion cultures in our society.  Have students specultate about what students in other parts of the country and the world might have in their households.
