OUR COURSE OF STUDY
UNITED STATES HISTORY
1900 TO THE PRESENT

The Sixth Grade course focuses on modern America from the beginning of the twentieth century to present times. Because our world is mostly effected by national and international events and changes after World War II, the thrust of this year’s study is placed most heavily on recent history. Special emphasis is placed on the study of America as a world leader. *

The course is divided into four broad topics:

FIRST NINE WEEKS:

  I.  The Emergence of Modern America: 1900-1928*
In the introduction to this study, students will review major changes in America from 1870 to 1900. This will include industrialization, urbanization, cultural changes and technology.

SECOND/THIRD NINE WEEKS:

II.  The Great Depression and World War II: 1929-1945*
This unit will help the student identify the contributing factors of the stock market crash of 1929 and the Great Depression. It will explain the significance of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and  the United States' entrance into World War II.

THIRD/FOURTH NINE WEEKS:

  III.  Postwar United States: 1945-1969*
This unit will evaluate changes in the United States after World War II. It will also describe
significant events of the Cold War, The Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War.

IV.  Contemporary Unites States, 1970- Present*
In this unit the students will study the effectiveness of the Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan and Bush administrations. The impact of technological innovations, immigration, and other social issues of the 1990's will be studied.
