Welcome to Communication Skills! Schedule/Assignments: 8/19: Introduction to course. 8/20: Share results of class surveys. Introduction to the book and a preview of what's to come. Students are to bring their textbook to class tomorrow along with their notebooks to take notes on the Chapter One lecture. 8/21: Lecture on Chapter One and the Communication Model/Process. 8/24: Continue lecture. Students are to complete the assignment in their textbook, p.10 Taking Charge #1 and bring their "symbol" along with their typed paragraph to class on Wednesday. 8/25: Conclude lecture on Chap. 1. A Chap. 1 worksheet will be given out in class and is due tomorrrow. Don't forget your "symbol" assignment, too! 8/26: Students will share their "symbols" with the class and turn in the typed assignment. Chap. 1 worksheets will be collected. Students will work in groups on the "stereotyping" activity. 8/27: We will review for tomorrow's Chap. 1 Test. Students will share the results of yesterday's "stereotyping" activity. If time, groups will role-play ethical situations showing both ethical and nonethical methods. 8/28: Chapter One Test. 8/31: Begin Chapter Two- Building Confidence. 9/1: Continue Chapter 2 notes. Study questions for the chapter will be given out in class and are due tomorrow. The test for Chapter 2 will be Friday. 9/2: Finish Chapter 2 notes. Collect worksheets. 9/3: Review for tomorrow's test on Chapter 2. 9/4: Test on Chapter 2. 9/8: Begin Chapter Three lecture notes. 9/9: Continue lecture. Pass out assignment sheet for our next speech- The Gripe Speech. Speeches will begin next week after the Chapter 3 unit test. 9/10: Chapter 3 worksheets will be given out in class and are due Friday. We will begin our listening activities. 9/11: Collect worksheets. Continue listening activities. 9/14: Listening activities conclude. 9/15: Lecture and discussion on logical fallacies. Worksheets will be handed out and due by the end of Thursday's class. 9/16: Finish discussion of logical fallacies. 9/17: In-class work on logical fallacies worksheets, which will be collected at the end of the period. 9/18: In-class activity- using magazines, we will look for examples of logical fallacies found in advertising. 9/21: Review for tomorrow's Chapter Three Test. Don't forget that your gripe speeches start Wednesday. 9/22: Chapter Three Test. 9/23: We begin Chapter Four- Nonverbal Communication. Lecture notes. 9/24: Period 2 will hear lecture on bullying in the auditorium. Period 3 will continue with lecure notees. Period 3 will commit to a topic for your gripe speech. 9/25: Period 2 will continue lecture notes and commit to a topic for your gripe speech. Period 3 will discuss yesterday's lecture on bullying. All gripe speeches begin next Tuesday. 9/28: NO SCHOOL- Faculty Retreat. 9/29: Gripe speeches begin. 9/30: Gripe speeches continue. 10/1: Gripe speeches conclude. 10/2: Nonverbal communication lecture continues. 10/5: Nonverbal communication lecture concludes. 10/6: Discussion of categories of gestures. Chapter 4 worksheets will be given out in class and are due Thursday. 10/7: We will look at silent film footage and perform pantomimes. Students will be given a nonverbal cartoon writing assignment which will be due Friday. 10/8:Chapter 4 worksheets are due and will be collected at the start of class. We will begin our first round of charades. Yippee! 10/9: Charades continue. 10/12: NO SCHOOL! 10/13: View scenes from silent films. 10/14: NO SCHOOL-TESTING DAY! 10/15: -Review for tomorrow's Chapter Four test. 10/16: Chapter Four test. 10/19: Begin Chapter Five- lecture on Interpersonal Communication. 10/20: Continue Chapter Five notes- proper phone etiquette regarding both socila calls and business calls. 10/21: Read and discuss Section 2- People Skills. Study guide sheets for Chapter Five will be given out in class and are due tomorrow. 10/22: Collect Study guide sheets We will do some role-plating of interpersonal communication situations. 10/23: Quick quiz on Chapter Five. Finish role-playing activities. 10/26: Review for tomorrow's test on Chapter Five. 10/27: Chapter Five Test. 10/28: Role-playing activity: Assertive, Nonassertive, and Aggressive Tones. The worksheet handed out in class is homework and due tomorrow. 10/29: We begin Chapter Six- Interviewing. Leccture on Informational interviews. Your tone worksheet will be collected. 10/30: Halloween Charades!! 11/2: Continue lecture on Infortmative Interviewing. For homeworl: Due Wednesday-p.135 Thinking Critically #2 Think of a famous person you would like to interview and TYPE a list of TEN questions you would ask that person if you had the opportunity. Along with that, in preparation for our guest speaker (Melissa Forman) include FIVE TYPED questions you would ask of her. 11/3: Conclude Informative interviewing notes. In-class assignment- correct 9 badly written interview questions to make sure they are neither leading and/or yes/no. This handout is due at the end of the period today. 11/4: Begin preparation for our next speech- the Interview speech. This round of speeches will begin next Wednesday, 11/11. Students will be given the assignment requirements and then will choose a partner in class to interview. A sample set of interview questions will be given out, but you may use your own. 11/5: We will look at footage of Monday's guest speaker to familiarize ourselves better. If remaining class time, students may work on interview speeches. 11/9: Guest speaker presentation! 11/10: Follow-up to our guest speaker. Remaining class time will be used to dtermine speaking order and any last minute issues. 11/11: Interview speeches begin. 11/12: Interview speeches continue. 11/13: Interview speeches continue. Chapter Six worksheets will be given out and are due Monday. 11/16: Interview speeches conclude. We begin Job interviewing lecture. We will discuss resumes and cover letters. Students will be asked to type up a resume of their own- due next Monday, 11/23. 11/17: Continue lecture on job interviewing. 11/18: Finish up job interviewing and talk about college interviewing. 11/19: Review for tomorrow's Chapter Six/Unit Test on Interviewing. 11/20: Interviewing Unit Test. Resumes are due Monday!!
