Welcome to Communication Skills! 1/17: Introduction to the class/course. A class syllabus and course outline will be handed out and discussed. Students will be given a survey to fill out. Answers to the survey will be shared at the beginning of class tomorrow. 1/18: Surveys will be shared. Students will be introduced to the book and its format. We will then begin the lecture on Chapter One. We will focus on the Communication Model- the diagram itself and the 6 components. 1/19: We will continue lecture notes on Chapter One. We will discuss the 5 barriers/obstacles to communication. 1/20: We will continue with lecture notes. We will talk about the various types of communication, including intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, public, and mass. W For homework: p.10 Taking Charge #1- students are to bring in an item that symbolizes something special to them. They will share with the class what their symbol means and what it should communicate to others who see it. Along with the item, students should type a paragraph explaining this. The paragraph will be turned in at the time of the presentation. 1/23: Symbol presentations. We will continue notes on Chapter One. 1/24: Finish up notes on Chapter One. Students will participate in an activity on ethics in advertising. With a partner, they will be asked to find a magazine ad and analyze it ethically. I.e. Is it ethical? Why or why not? They will then share their findings with the class. 1/26: We will review for tomorrow's test on Chapter One. Students will participate in an activity on "stereotyping." 1/27: Chapter One Test. 1/30: We begin Chapter Two- Building Confidence. We will discuss the concepts of "fear", "phobias", and "stagefright", and "perception." We will look at examples of perception and we will participate in an activity on common phobias where we will rate the phobia in its order of fear. 1/31: We will continue with Chapter notes by beginning to discuss the Planks of Confidence as found in Section 3. We will discuss proper ways to practice for a speech along with the Deger rules for notecards. 2/1: We will finish up the Planks of Confidence. Our next speech will be presented- "My Most Embarrassing Moment." The speeches will begin next Thursday. 2/2: We will review for tomorrow's Chapter 2 test. 2/3: Chapter 2 Test. 2/6: We begin Chapter 3- Listening. The difference between hearing and listening along with the 4 styles of listening will be presented. Students will be given a handout to complete which will examine the purposes for listening. 2/7: We will continue our listening lecture (Section 2) by discussing the 7 habits of bad listening and ways to improve on them. A handout on "Why Listen" will be read together and discussed. 2/8: In-class activity- using their textbooks, students will complete a Chapter 3 packet of matching terms, true/false statements, and fill-in-the-blank material. 2/9: Students will begin a series of listening tests and activities. These will include a personal survey on their current listening habits, a timed test for listeners, a listener's training passage, and various other activities. 2/10: Listening activities continue. The primary focus of these activities will be on following directions. 2/13: We will continue our listening activities. 2/14: We conclude our listening activities. 2/15: We will finish up our discussion of "logical fallacies.' Students will be given a packet on critical listening- this will include evaluating propaganda, determining fact from opinion, recognizing propaganda appeals, and judging evidence for reliability. They will work together with partners and then go over the results with the entire class. 2/16: We will review for Tuesday's test on Chapter 3. Students will be given a handout on the types of propaganda used in advertising and then will participate in an activity on advertising in which they will analyze ads in magazines and find examples of propaganda. They will share their findings orally with the class. 2/21: Chapter 3 Test. Gripe speeches begin Thursday!!!! 2/22: In-class workshop to prepare for the Gripe speech. Students will go over outlining and expectations of the speech itself. 2/23: Gripe speeches begin! 2/24: Gripe speeches continue. 2/27: We begin Chapter 4- Nonverbal Communication. 9/19: We will continue Chapter 3 notes with Effective Listening Strategies (Section 3). This will include correct listening posture (students will be asked to demonstrate) and an introduction to logical fallacies/propaganda. 9/20: Using handouts given in class, students will work with partners to distinguish types of logical fallacies found in given situations. They will also work on a handout to determine "fact from opinion." 9/21: Magazine activity- using the knowledge of logical fallacies/propaganda from yesterday's class, students will work with partners to find examples in advertising. They will then share their ads with the class tomorrow after the review. 9/22: We will review for tomorrow's Chapter 3 Test- Listening. We will share our advertising examples. 9/23: Chapter 3 Test. 9/26: Faculty Institute Day- No School! 9/27: We begin Chapter 4- Nonverbal Communication. Students will take notes on the information given in Section One. For homework: Write three facts about yourself- two are actually true and one is false. You will share these in fron of the class and the class will try to determine (Based on what we have learned about how to tell when someone is lying) which fact is not true. 9/28: We will begin class with a brief discussion of yesterday's assembly. Students will then take notes on the information found in Section Two. They will also be given information regarding the 6 essentials of nonverbal communication. With time remaining, we will share our 3 statements (yesterday's homework assignment). 9/29: We will begin watching the film The Secrets of Body Language. After completing the viewing of the film, students will write a one-page reaction paper to what they observed. A handout will be given in class detailing some of the guidelines. The paper will be due Tuesday. 9/30: Continue watching The Secrets of Body Language. 10/3: Finish watching "The Secrets of Body Language." Your typed reaction paper is due tomorrow. 10/4: Collect reaction papers. We will continue our unit on Body Language with a focus on multicultural messages- gestures around the world, signs of greeting, and types of space. We will go over the rules for a proper handshake. 10/5: Nonverbal activities. 10/6:The pantomime activity will be introduced. 10/7: The Collage Presentation will be introduced. The actual presentations will be gin next Thursday. With remaining time, CHARADES!!!! 10/11: Collage workshop. Students will work on creating their collages in class. 10/12: No School-Testing Day. 10/13: Collage Presentations. 10/14: Collage Presentations. 10/17: Finish up nonverbal unit. We will review for tomorrow's test on Chapter 4. 10/18: Chapter 4 Test- Nonverbal Communication 10/19: We begin Chapter 5- Interpersonal Communication. We will focus on what it means and its purposes. 10/20: We will focus on appropriate tones- aggressive, assertive, and nonassertive. 10/21: We will discuss the proper use of the telephone in making social and business calls. 10/24: We will discuss "People Skills" - Making Introductions, Effective Participation in Conversations, and Offering/Receiving Criticism. Students will be given a worksheet on "tones" to be completed for tomorrow's class. 10/25: We will conclude Chapter 5 notes with the characteristics of interpersonal communication. Students will share their "tone " worksheets. 10/26: Review for tomorrow's test on Chapter 5. We will also role-play interpersonal situations. 10/27: Chapter 5 Test. 10/28: We will watch a video of "Larry King's Greatest Interviews" in preparation for our next unit on Interviewing. 10/31: Halloween Charades!!!!! 11/1: We begin Chapter 6- Interviewing. I will lecture on the 1st type of Interviewing- Informative. 11/2: We continue notetaking on Informative Interviewing. For homework: Textbook p. 135 #2. Choose a famous person you would like to interview. TYPE up a list of ten questions you would ask that person if you had the chance. Be sure to ask effective questions and include the famous person's name at the top of your list. 11/3: Students will share their famous person interview questions. Students will be given a worksheet containing poor interview questions because they are yes-no questions or leading questions. Students will rewrite each one so that it becomes an unbiased open-ended question. Finish the worksheet for homework. 11/7: Collect worksheet on correcting poor interview questions. We will go over the "Interview Speech" assignment. We will also go over the rules of Outlining a Speech. Students will choose partners to interview for the interview speech and be given remaining class time to start interviewing each other. Interview speeches will begin next Tuesday! 11/8: We begin lecture on "Job Interviewing." We will focus on Cover letters and resumes. Along with notetaking, students will watch a video expanding on these ideas. For homework: Students will type up a one-page summary which will be due Friday 11/11. 11/9: Job Interviewing continues with a focus on the actual 5-part interview process. Students will be given a handout to follow along. We will then watch a video clip on interviewing. 11/10: We will continue yesterday's discussion, including a look at common job interview questions. Don't forget about your resume which is due tomorrow. 11/11: Collect resumes. We will conduct mock-job interviews. We will determine our order for speeches which will start Wednesday. For homework: Work on your interview speech and outline. 11/15: Class time to work on speeches. We will also determine the order for speeches which begin tomorrow. Students will be given a copy of the actual rubric which will be used to evaluate the interview speech. 11/16: Interview speeches begin! 11/17: Interview speeches continue. 11/18: Interview speeches conclude. 11/21: Review for tomorrow's test on Chapter 6- Interviewing. 11/22: Chapter Six Test. Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!! 11/28: We begin Chapter 7- Group Discussion. We will go over notes on Section 1-Working Together Makes Sense and focus on the term "discussion" and the various types of discussion formats. 11/29: We will continue our Chapter 7 notes by focusing on the factors for success in group discussion and group problem solving (Section 2). We will discuss John Dewey's 6-step system for discussion. 11/30: We will continue our Chapter 7 notes by focusing on conflict management, the different types of personalities often found in groups, and how to contribute to a discussion (Section 3). This will include the roles of participants and leaders. 12/1: Group discussion activities. 12/2: Group discussion activities. 12/5: We will begin watching the film "12 Angry Men." 12/6: We will continue watching the film. 12/7: We will continue watching the film. 12/8: Students will complete a follow-up writing assignment to the film. With remaining class time, we will review for tomorrow's test on Chapter 7. 12/9: Chapter 7 test. 12/12: We begin our unit on Informative speaking. Students will be assigned the Informative speech to begin on Thursday of this week. 12/13: We will discuss how to prepare an informative speech. A handout on this will be distributed and gone over. We will also do an exercise on articulation improvement- students will practice "Tongue Twisters." For homework: Students are to decide their topics for their informative speeches. 12/14: We will go over "visual aids." We will look at types of visual aids and when and how to use them in a speech. Students must have ONE visual aid in their informative speech. For homework: Practice your speech. 12/15: Informative speeches begin! 12/16: Informative speeches continue. 12/19: Informative speeches continue. 12/20: Informative speeches conclude! If time remains, Christmas charades!!! Have a wonderful Christmas Break! See you next year! 1/3: Welcome back! Today we will begin our min-unit on persuasive speaking. We will go over what it actually means and why it is the highest level of public speaking. Along with that, we will discuss the audience analysis and the factors that go into that, and the four types of audiences a persuasive speaker might face. Students will be given a review study guide for the semester exam and also the handout detailing our last speech performance- "The Commercial." The commercial is due Monday, January 9-NO EXCEPTIONS. 1/4: We will go over Monroe's Motivated Sequence since students will be asked to follow that pattern in planning their commercials. Students will be given class time to get together with their groups and work on the planning of their commercials. Students will commit to a particular product by tomorrow. 1/5: Students will commit to their commercial products. More class time will be given to work on commercials. A rough draft of their script is due tomorrow. Students will view commercials from past classes. 1/6: Rough draft scripts are due. More class time to work on commercials. Commercial CD and final script are due Monday!!! 1/9: Collect Commercial CD's and scripts. With remaining time, we will do a round of impromptu speaking. 1/10: Review for semester exam and view commercials from our class.
