Welcome to Communication Skills! 1/21: Introduction to the class/course. A class syllabus and course outline will be handed out and discussed. Students will be given a survey to fill out. Answers to the survey will be shared at the beginning of class tomorrow. 1/22: Surveys will be shared. 1/23: Students will be introduced to the book and its format. We will then begin the lecture on Chapter One. We will focus on the Communication Model- the diagram its 6 components. We will also discuss the 5 barriers/obstacles to communication along with the definition. 1/24: We will continue with lecture notes. We will talk about the various types of communication, including intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, public, and mass. For homework for Monday's class: p.10 Taking Charge #1- students are to bring in an item that symbolizes something to them. They will share with the class what their symbol means and what it should communicate to others who see it. Along with the item, students must TYPE a paragraph explaining this. The paragraph will be turned in at the time of the presentation. 1/27- 1/28: NO SCHOOL DUE TO EXTREME WEATHER! The symbol presentations have been moved to Friday 1/31. 1/29: We will finish up our lecture notes on Chapter One. This will include a review of Aristotle's 3 major appeals: logical, emotional, and personal. We will also discuss "stereotyping." Students will participate in an activity where they will role-play ethical communication situations. 1/30: Students will participate in an activity on ethics in advertising. With a partner, they will be asked to find a magazine ad and analyze it ethically. I.e. Is it ethical? Why or why not? They will then share their findings with the class. 1/31: Symbol presentations. 2/3: We will review for tomorrow's test on Chapter One. Students will also be given an assignment to complete for Wednesday's class- using a picture of a person found in a magazine, students will write a brief biography about the person based on their perception which will include the use of stereotyping- positive or negative. 2/4: Chapter One Test. 2/5: Students will share their stereotyping perception biographies. We will finish up any remaining activities for Chapter One. 2/6: We begin Chapter Two- Building Confidence. We will discuss the concepts of "fear", "phobias","stagefright", and "perception." We will look at examples of perception in pictures. 2/7:Students will participate in an activity on common phobias where we will rate the phobia in its order of degree of fear. We will continue with Chapter notes by discussing the Planks of Confidence as found in Section 3. We will discuss proper ways to practice for a speech along with the Deger rules for notecards. 2/10: We will review for tomorrow's Chapter 2 test. Students will be given hypothetical situations which might shake one's confidence and discuss how the situations should be properly handled. Students will also be given a list of true/false statements which might appear on tomorrow's test. They will answer the statements on their own and then we will correct them together in class. 2/11: Chapter 2 Test. With remaining time, students will participate in a word association activity which deals with perception. 2/12: Due to the large number of students on Kairos, we will watch the video "The King's Speech." 2/13: We will continue watching "The King's Speech." 2/14: NO SCHOOL- INSTITUTE DAY! 2/17: NO SCHOOL- PRESIDENT'S DAY! 2/18: We begin Chapter 3- Listening. 2/19: The guidelines for the next speech "The Gripe Speech" will be presented in class. The round of speeches will begin immediately after we finish Chapter 3. The difference between hearing and listening along with the 4 styles of listening will be presented. Students will be given a worksheet on examining and identifying listening purposes which is to be completed as homework for tomorrow's class. 2/20: We will go over the worksheet from yesterday. We will continue our listening lecture (Section 2) by discussing the 7 habits of bad listening and ways to improve on them. Students will be given a handout on steps in listening effectively from preparing to listen to providing feedback. A handout on "Why Listen" will be read together and discussed. 2/21: Students will begin a series of listening tests and activities. These will include a personal survey on their current listening habits, a timed test for listeners, a listener's training passage, and various other activities. Students will be asked to keep a log for the next few days which will monitor their time spent in the 4 different purposes for listening. This will be due Tuesday. 2/24: We will continue our listening activities, which will include listening to a reading passage and then answering questions on it. We will also participate in 2 games "Listen to This" and "Word Challenge." 2/25: Listening logs will be collected at the start of class. We continue our listening activities. 2/26: We will continue with our listening activities. 2/27: We will return to Chapter 3 Notes with our discussion of "logical fallacies." Students will be given a packet on critical listening- this will include evaluating propaganda, determining fact from opinion, recognizing propaganda appeals, and judging evidence for reliability. They will work together with partners and then go over the results with the entire class. 2/28: We will review for Monday's test on Chapter 3. Students will be given a handout on the types of propaganda used in advertising and then will participate in an activity on advertising in which they will analyze ads in magazines and find examples of propaganda. They will share their findings orally with the class. 3/3: Chapter 3 Test. For tomorrow: Everyone should be prepared to give his or her speech and have a typed outline to turn in. I am hoping to get through about 7 speeches. 3/4: Gripe speeches begin! Remember that your TYPED outline is due today since there is no predetermined order for speeches. 3/5: Gripe speeches continue. 3/6: Gripe speeches continue. 3/7: Finish up our gripe speeches. 3/10: We will begin Chapter 4- Nonverbal Communication. We will begin our lecture notes with a focus on body language and the interpretation of nonverbal messages. We will also focus on how to tell when someone is lying. For homework: Students are to type up 3 statements about themselves- 2 true and 1 false. We will read these out loud tomorrow and determine through observation which is the lie based on what we learned today. 3/11: We will share our true/false statements. We will discuss the "6 elements of Nonverbal Communication. We will also discuss the 4 types of "distance." 3/12: The assignment for the reaction paper will be given out in class and it will be due next Monday. We will then participate in some nonverbal activities. 3/13: We begin watching the video "Secrets of Body Language." 3/14: Finish watching the film. The reaction paper to the film is due Monday! 3/17: Reaction papers will be collected at the start of class. Continue Chapter 4, Section 3 notes- Multicultural Messages. We will focus on touching customs, the 3 categories of gestures, and the 3 main uses of gestures. Students will be given a nonverbal cartoon to be completed for tomorrow's class. 3/18: Collect and share nonverbal cartoons.Students will also be given a handout of true/false statements from Chapter 4 to complete for tomorrow's class and use as a review for Thursday's test. With remaining time, students will look at some silent films and note the emphasis/exaggeration of gestures to compensate for the absence of verbal communication. 3/19: Review for the unit test on Chapter 4- Nonverbal Communication. We will go over the handout of true/false statements. 3/20: Chapter 4 test. 3/21: CHARADES!!! 3/22-3/30: SPRING BREAK! MAKE IT A FESTIVE ONE! 3/31: We begin Chapter 5- Interpersonal Communication. We will discuss the 3 basic tones- aggressive, nonassertive, and assertive. Students will participate in an activity on "using the telephone effectively." 4/1: We will discuss the proper rules for handling social calls and business calls. 4/2: We will focus on the term "people skills." Students will be given a handout on the rules for formal introductions. Students will role-play introducing people, giving and receiving criticism, and giving and receiving directions. Students will be given the guidelines for their next oral presentation- the collage. 4/3:We will go over the 6 characteristics of interpersonal communication. 4/4:Students will also be given a worksheet "Levels of Me" and determine the degree of privacy in described situations. 4/7: Review for tomorrow's Chapter 5 Test. With remaining time, students will be able to work on their collage speeches which will begin Wednesday. 4/8: Chapter 5 Test. 4/9: Collage speeches begin. 4/10: Collage speeches continue. 4/11: Collage speeches continue. 4/14: Collage speeches continue. 4/15: Collage speeches conclude. 4/16: In preparation for our unit on Interviewing, students will look at videos of great interviews- Oprah Winfrey and Larry King. 4/17-4/21: EASTER BREAK! 4/22: We begin Chapter 6- Interviewing. We will focus on the purpose of the informational interview and the preparation involved. 4/23: We will continue Chapter 6, Sections 1-3. Students will be given a worksheet on "Open-ended questions." Students will rewrite poorly worded interview questions. This is due at the start of tomorrow's class. For Friday's class, students will be assigned p.135, Thinking Critically #2- choose a famous person and TYPE a list of 10 quality questions they would ask of that person if given the opportunity. 4/24: Collect "open-ended questions" worksheet. We will begin our lecture and discussion of the job interviewing process by focusing on resumes and cover letters. Students will watch a video on the do's and don'ts of resumes and cover letters and then be given samples of both. Students will then be asked to type up a resume for themselves. This will be due Friday, May 2nd. 4/25: The 10-question interview assignment will be collected and shared with the class. We will then continue our discussion of the job interview process. We will continue our lecture notes on Job interviewing. We will focus on the 5 major parts of the interview process- before, beginning, middle, end, and the follow-up. 4/28: We will continue our discussion of job interviewing. We will discuss persuasive speaking in preparation for our final project of the semester- THE COMMERCIAL. A handout on Monroe's Motivated Sequence will be given out and discussed. Students are to follow this organizational pattern for their presentations. The preliminary outline for the commercial is due next Monday, May 5th. 4/29: We will conclude our discussion of job interviewing with a focus on examples of questions commonly asked by either the interviewer or the interviewee. 4/30: Review for tomorrow's Chapter 6 Test. Students will be given a study guide. We will also go over true/false statements which might appear on tomorrow's test. Working in small groups, students will be given descriptions of possible candidates for a job and then decide as a group which candidate would be the best suited for the job and their reasons why. 5/1: Chapter 6 Test. Your typed resume is due tomorrow. With remaining class time, students may get together with their groups to work on their commercials. 5/2: Collect resumes. We begin Chapter 7- Group Discussion. We will focus on Section 1- Working Together Makes Sense. We will look at the different formats for group discussion. Students will be given some time in class to work with their commercial groups to complete the preliminary out line for the commercial which is due Monday. We will look at a few samples of past commercials. 5/5: The preliminary outlines for your commercials are due! We continue Chapter 7 with discussion of the factors for success, including John Dewey's system for discussion. Students will receive a handout on "brainstorming" and participate in an activity on it. 5/6:We will discuss the different personalities found in groups along with the roles of participant and leader and students will participate in various group activities, if time remains. 5/7: We will begin watching the film "!2 Angry Men." 5/8: Continue watching the film. Students will be given a follow-up assessment to the film to be completed in class. 5/9:Collect Commercial CD's and scripts. 5/12: Review for semester exam and view commercials submitted from our class.
