Prentice Hall Biology
BIOLOGY COURSE SYLLABUS

Course Description:   Of all the sciences, biology is one of the most interesting—and fun.  It is a science devoted to the study of life.  We will be reviewing the scientific method and conducting controlled experiments.  Our investigations will center on life processes, cellular organization,  mechanisms of inheritance, relationships among organisms and with their environments, and changes in organisms over time.

Materials Needed By Students:   1” loose leaf, 3 ring binder, loose leaf paper, pencils, and a set of colored pencils, which has a variety of colors in the same shade (ex.  Baby blue, sky blue, blue-violet, etc.), dry erase markers (2 large should last all year), and reinforcements for notebook paper holes.

Grading Criteria:   The following  will be used to determine grades and successful completion for course credit:
1) Unannounced quizzes and scheduled tests
2) Labs and activities
3) Class work
4) Group work
5) Special projects
6) Notebooks
7) Performance on SOL Test

Grades are based on a total points system.  For example during a grading period a possible 345 points might be attainable.  A student may have 299 out of the 345.  To find the student’s final grade, divide the points accumulated by the points possible.  The grade for this student would be an 87=B.  A total of 250 points would be a 72=D.  Additional points will be added for taking all tests on dates scheduled.
The county grading scale is:
A=100-93 B=92-85 C=84-77 D=76-70 F=below 70
Extra credit is not usually accepted.  However, five points for perfect attendance can be earned each grading period.  Current event articles, related to science can be brought in and discussed for five points (limited to 3 per grading period).  Students will also get 3 points for having their agenda books, which will be checked periodically.  These points are added in before the final average for the grading period is calculated.
                                                                                                                      Procedures & Classroom Rules:
1)  Be in your seat BEFORE  the bell rings.
2)  Sit in your assigned seats always.
3)  Always bring your pencils, notebooks, and biologybooks to class.  (colored pencils can be left in my room)  I WILL NOT provide pencils or pens.
4)  Only talk at appropriate times.  Especially do not talk when I am talking or when another student is talking.
5)  NO  book bags, gum, food, or drinks are allowed during class.
6)  Follow the attendance and make-up work policies posted on the wall and in your student handbook.   ALL students are to make up work missed, regardless of the reason for the absence.

Holt Environmental Science
ECOLOGY COURSE SYLLABUS

Course Description:  Environmental science is a multidisciplinary field that draws from all the sciences to help us better understand the relationship between humans and the world in which we live.  It applies the principles of chemistry and biology, to achieve practical goals.  The study of environmental science focuses on 3 major areas:
*conservation & protection of natural resources
*environmental education & communication
*environmental research

Grading criteria and procedures are the same as above, with the exception of no required SOL tests for Ecology.
