
COMPUTER APPLICATIONS ASSIGNMENT SHEET
2010-2011 Pacing Guide
Computer/Technology skills are essential components of every student's education. The Computer Application classes at WMS teach these skills in order to maximize opportunities for students to acquire necessary skills for academic success.
The teacher will broadcast new skills BEFORE each lesson using the SynchronEyes system on her computer. If the student has any trouble with the step-by-step directions in the book, the teacher can take control of the student's computer to show them how to complete a task.
Minimum skills that students should acquire by the end of Grade 8 include the following SOLs shown with the assignments below.
INTRODUCTION TO INTERNET EXPLORER
Computer/Technology SOL:
C/T8.2 The student will communicate through networks and telecommunication.
* Use local and worldwide network communication systems.
1. View video on "INTERNET VOCABULARY FOR THE CLASSROOM." Participate in class discussion during the video.
2. Sign up for a user name and password in order to login to quia.com, the web site where you will go to work on review activities and take your quizzes online. Your teacher will help you create an account.
3. Go to the bottom of this page to the Quia activities and find the JAVA GAME on "Internet Vocabulary for the Classroom." These JAVA GAMES will help you to review before taking a quiz on each lesson. Complete the game activities in this order: Word Search, Flash Cards, Matching Game, and Concentration Game. Complete at least one of each type of game before trying your quiz. We will complete this as a class assignment.
4. Go to the bottom of this page to the Quia activities to take your first QUIZ session, which will be the "Internet Vocabulary for the Classroom" (intervocab) quiz. You will need to login with your username and password. You must pass the quiz with a 70 or higher, but you can retake it as many times as necessary. There will be feedback for you to learn what you missed after each quiz.
MICROSOFT WORD 2007 - WORD PROCESSING
Computer/Technology SOL:
C/T8.1 The student will communicate through application software.
* Compose and edit a multi page document at the keyboard,using word processing skills and writing process steps.
1. To begin your textbook, COMPUTER LITERACY BASICS, you will need to create a personal data folder on the desktop of your computer. Follow teacher instructions to create this folder.
2. You will use the word processing program, MICROSOFT WORD 2007, to complete Lessons 1-5 in your textbook. Begin Lesson 1 pp. 3-20. Follow the step-by-step directions, loading up whatever files you need from your data folder. *Double click your personal folder, choose the folder called Data, then choose the the LESSON 1 folder.* We may use the following file for lesson 1 when I am presenting the lesson: Greenways File
3. When finished, load up a new blank document in MICROSOFT WORD. Type the VOCABULARY words on page 17. Look up the definitions in your Glossary, pp. 271-277. Save your vocabulary in your own folder using the filename "vocab1." You will be able to use your vocabulary during the quiz for lesson 1. **Make sure your Save Dialog Box shows that you are saving in your own personal folder at the top.**
4. Go to the bottom of this page to the Quia activities to take the (less1) QUIZ "Using Microsoft Office 2007." Login. You may also open up your vocabulary for Lesson 1 and minimize it on the task bar. During the quiz, you may SWITCH BETWEEN your vocabulary and your quiz by minimizing and maximizing. You must make at least a "70" before going to the next lesson.
5. Complete LESSON 2 in your textbook, pp. 21-38. Follow step-by-step directions. You do NOT have to complete the vocabulary for Lesson 2, but you should use the Java Games for this lesson in the Activities at the bottom of this site.
6. Go to the bottom of this page to the JAVA GAME, "Word Processing Basics," for Lessons 2 as a review before trying the quiz on lesson 2. Use the flash cards, complete the word search, and play the matching and concentration games. When you feel comfortable with the review, you will be ready to take your quiz.
7. Go to the bottom of this page to take the (less2) QUIZ "Word Processing Basics." Login. Remember, you must make at least a "70" to move on.
8. Complete LESSON 3, Editing and Formatting Documents, in your textbook, pp. 39-66. Follow step-by-step instructions.
9. Go to the bottom of this page to the JAVA GAME, "Editing and Formatting with Microsoft Word 2007." Use the activities for a review. You should always review with the flash cards. Then you may choose which other activities would help you the most before you try the next quiz.
10. Go to the bottom of this page to take the QUIZ " Editing and Formatting Documents--Word 2007--Lesson 3." Retake if necessary.
PORTFOLIO PROJECTS:
You will apply what you have learned in the first three lessons by completing the following portfolio projects using MICROSOFT WORD 2007:

WILLOW CANYON HIGH SCHOOL memo -- "port3"
11. Complete LESSON 4, "Using Tables," in your textbook, pp. 67-83. Follow step-by-step instructions.
12. Go to the bottom of this page to take the QUIZ "Using Tables with Microsoft Office 2007." Retake if necessary.
13. Complete LESSON 5, "Adding Features to Multipage Documents," in your textbook, pp. 85-108. Follow step-by-step instructions.
14. Go to the bottom of this page to the JAVA GAME, "Adding Features to Multipage Documents" for a review.
15. Go to the bottom of this page to take the QUIZ "Adding Features to Multipage Documents. "
Computer/Technology SOL:

* Use advanced publishing software, graphics programs,
and scanners to produce page layouts.
PORTFOLIO PROJECTS:
You will apply what you have learned in the last two lessons by completing the following portfolio projects using MICROSOFT WORD 2007:

THE INTERNET CAFE menu -- "port6"
CREATING EFFECTIVE PRESENTATIONS report -- "port7"
Print out hard copies, and place into your "Computer Literacy Portfolios" that will go to the high school at the end of your eighth-grade year.
Unit 4 -- MICROSOFT EXCEL
Computer/Technology SOL:
C/T8.1 The student will communicate through application software.
* Communicate with spreadsheets by entering data and
setting up formulas, analyzing data, and creating
graphs or charts to visually represent data.
1. Teacher Presentation--Complete a spreadsheet which compares the SOL scores of the schools in the county. Graph the results into a bar graph format.
Print out hard copies for your portfolio.
Unit 5 -- DATABASES
Computer/Technology SOL:
C/T8.1 The student will communicate through application software.
* Communicate with databases by defining fields and entering data, sorting, and producing reports in various forms.
C/T8.4 The student will process, store, retrieve, and transmit electronic information.
* Use search strategies to retrieve electronic information.
1. Complete a class database as a group project together in class. Your teacher will present this assignment.
COMPUTER PROCESSING VOCABULARY:
C/T8.3 The student will have a basic understanding of computer processing, storing, retrieval and transmission
technologies.

FINAL COMPUTER/TECHNOLOGY SOL TEST
1. Go to the bottom of this page to the "Useful Links." Choose the link for the COMPUTER/TECHNOLOGY PRACTICE SOL TEST. Complete this as a review before your final test.
2. Take the final Virginia Computer/Technology SOL Test. This test will be given to you by your teacher. A copy of your test answer sheet will be placed in your "Computer Literacy Portfolio" which will go to the high school.
7TH AND 8TH GRADE COMPUTER CURRICULUM
Computer Applications 6150 (Middle School) Grade 7 (Nine Weeks)
Grade 8 (Twelve Weeks)
Prerequisite: None
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is a nine-week course for 7th grade students and a twelve-week course for 8th grade students. Students develop or review correct keyboarding techniques and gain a basic knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, database, and telecommunications applications. Students demonstrate an understanding of computer concepts through application of knowledge. Students learn to use software packages and local and worldwide network communication systems. Grade 8 Computer/Technology SOLs are incorporated and reinforced in this course.
CLASS EXPECTATIONS:
Students should show an increase in their typing skill by the end of the term. Also, students will produce a hard copy portfolio showing representative pieces of work covering the competencies for the course. At least 80% of the students should be able to pass the final Computer/Technology SOL test.

Software:
Basic Microtype Tutor. Kratzer, Richard and Cook, John, J. E\Weston Walch Published, 1988. (Basic Microtype Tutor is utility program used for speed drills and accuracy drills. It automatically computes student’s speed and accuracy.) Used for warmups.
Typing Time. Hoggart and Shank. Southwestern Publishing Company, 2003. This program is used when a keyboard review is necessary and also for printing out timed writings for student portfolios.
ASSESSMENT:
The seventh-grade class uses the pass/fail grading option.
The eighth-grade class uses the regular grading system: A, B, C, D, F.

Timed Writing Improvement at Mid-Term and End-of-Term.
Quizzes created on quia.com for each lesson covered in the textbook.
