Dear Parents,

Welcome to Sixth grade and to my classroom. Sixth graders will be studying Earth Science throughout this year. The topics to be covered are: Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Plate tectonics, Natural resources, Earth's surface, Earth's atmosphere, Weather, Climate, Space exploration, Earth-moon-sun system, our Solar System, Stars, Galaxies and the Universe. The ultimate goal for the sixth grade Science program is to encourage our students to become thinkers and problem solvers and to develop curiosity and an understanding of the world around them.

Your child's Science grade is based on the accumulation of points obtained on homework, classwork, quizzes, tests and projects. Tests are worth 100 points each, quizzes are worth from 40-75 points depending on the quiz, classwork and homework usually are worth 20-25 points each, and projects are worth from 50-80 points depending on the project.
I usually have homework 2-3 times a week. My students are encouraged to write their daily assignments in the student assignment pad obtained at headstart. I also post my homework weekly on my webpage. If I assign homework, I do expect my students to complete it and bring it to class the next day. I will take a grade as I check it the next day. If a student is absent, please ask them to see me immediately upon returning to school, so I can give the student their make-up work.
There are usually 2-3 Tests in a nine week period. I try to have quizzes occationally during a unit to see how the students are understanding the concepts presented. I will tell them before we have a quiz or test. I usually post test dates 2 weeks before the test date. Testing days for Science are on Tuesdays and Fridays. I can have a quiz on any day of the week.

I am looking forward to a great year with your child. Please feel free to e-mail me with any concerns or questions you may have.

Sincerely,
Marcee Corn
