The Counseling Center at Pender High School is available to assist students with their social, academic and career decision-making needs. Counselors are assigned according to the first initial of students' last names as follows: A-G Ms. DeShields H-M Ms. Rhinehart N-Z Ms. Wyckoff The following are the announcements for the counseling department: TEEN COURT The next teen court session will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 12th at 5:00 PM at the Pender County Courthouse. TESTING Registration materials for the SAT and ACT are available in the counseling office. Sample test are also available. For those registering, Pender High School's code is 340490. For test preparation material or other information about preparing for college, please see the links below. SCHOLARSHIPS The Phi Delta Kappa Chapter at UNC-W will award (2) scholarships for seniors interested in the field of education. The scholarship is awarded based on academic standing and school/community involvement. Letters of recommedation and an essay are also required. Please come to the counseling center for an application. The deadline is 1-15-02. The NC Bar Association Scholarship is available to students whose parent is/was a law enforcement officer who lost his/her life or became permanently disabled in the line of duty. Come by the counseling center for details. The deadline is April 1, 2002. The NC Bowling Scholarship fund has a $1,000 scholarship available for students who are members of a local YABA league or whose parents/guardians are memberes of a YABA league. Please come by the counseling center for more information. The deadline is March 15th. The Alliance Credit Union has a scholarship available for members of the credit union. The award amount is $1,000. Please come by the counseling center for additional information. The deadline is March 29, 2002. Bennett College has scholarship opportunities available. The criteria is as follows: GPA of 3.5-3.0 and SAT of 1100-850 or ACT of 26-21 Please come by the counseling center for more details. The Reformed Universal Masonic Brotherhood and Order of Eastern Star, Inc has scholarship opportunities available. Interested students should see their counselor. The deadline is March 15th. Applications for the Dr. Martin Luther King Scholarship are available in the counseling center. Students must be seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.0. The deadline is April 15th. NC STATE UNIVERSITY-COLLEGE OF TEXTILES The College of Textiles at NCSU offers many exciting majors including Textile Chemistry, Textile Engineering, Textile Management, and Textile Technology. 91% of the 2001 grads had been placed in jobs shortly after graduation and the average starting salary was $42,064! Sound interesting to you? If so, you can come by the counseling center and get additional information from Ms. DeShields. Also, the College of Textiles will have their open house on Saturday, February 9, 2002. Interested students should plan to attend. There are also scholarship opportunities available. The College of Textiles has a Summer Textile Exploration Program (S.T.E.P.) for rising high school seniors that are interested in the field of study. The fee, once accepted, is $50. Apply early-there are a limited number of spaces. Applications are available now in the counseling center. The deadline is May 1, 2002. Th NC House of Representatives Page Program affords students betweent the ages of 15 and 18 the opportunity to learn abouit the law-making process by participating in the legislative process.
