COURSE REQUIREMENTS Because this is a skills-development course, attendance is crucial. Some moderately light reading is required and Internet research. COURSE OBJECTIVES The purpose of this course is to help students to gain an understanding of the Internet, and to develop the basic skills for navigating the 'net and creating cool web pages. The student will 1. Gain an overview of the history of the Internet. 2. Be able to access Internet and E-mail, send and receive email using their email account. 3. Be able to participate in email, Internet and VDO Conferencing and have discussions, Brainstorms, and knowledge on how to access and search Internet using the Search engines. 4. Be able to identify the equipment-needed hardware and software to access VDO conferencing and Internet or email. 5. Be able to have a good knowledge of the following: electronic mail, news groups, and chat, the world wide web, online shopping and security, interesting news groups, interesting web sites, and knowledge of all the search engines. 6. Be able to email a friend and send and receive email. Be able to understand the basic components of data communications. 7. Be able to understand how the Internet works. 8. Be able to demonstrate the ability to locate information using a variety of Internet tools. 9. Be able to distinguish among different information to search for on the Internet. 10. Be able to critically evaluate information on the Internet and interpret the information for the knowledge and research. 11. Be able to create and manage a simple web page and home page. TEACHING METHODS This class will be taught using online instructions. This means that guided exercises will be conducted in class, with assistance from the online instructor. Some class time will also be available for independent exploration by the student. Because of the size of the class and the nature of the guided exercises, however, it is important that the student avoid independent exploration during class unless instructed to do so. EVALUATION TECHNIQUES Grades for this course will be determined by attendance, as measured by completion of exercises and assignments. GRADING SYSTEM Your final grade will be determined using the following criteria: Satisfactory = 75 - 100% attendance. Unsatisfactory = less than 75% attendance. ATTENDANCE POLICY School policy requires your attendance in class and use of common sense should suggest that it is to your advantage to attend class. I will not, however, penalize you for missing a single class. You are responsible for any information missed due to an absence. It is your responsibility to find out what you missed and to get any assignments for the next class. LATE ASSIGNMENTS AND MAKE-UP TEST POLICY There are exams and quizzes, but there are several required assignments that I use to check attendance. Late assignments will not normally be accepted. CLASSROOM ETHICS AND BEHAVIOR Students are required to abide by the Acceptable Use Policy, the Computing Resource Guidelines, any other regulations set by Internet Policy Agreement, and the conventions for Internet use. READING ASSIGNMENTS No specific assignments, but scan the text for material relevant to your own needs. FREE EMAIL You must be able to access your email from the classroom and elsewhere.
