Welcome
ASSIGNMENTS ARE LISTED ON THE CALENDAR
My name is Cynthia Warren and I will be your Earth Science teacher this year. I am a native of Washington County, having graduated from John S. Battle. I received my Bachelor's degree from Radford and my Master of Education degree from the University of Virginia. My teaching experience has been in Virginia and in Georgia and I have taught grades K-12. The number of years I have taught will remain a secret. :) I am married and have two wonderful sons.
I look forward to getting to know each of you and hope that the information you learn in Earth Science will be of use to you throughout your life.
Course Description
Students in Earth Science will apply basic concepts in all branches of the field which include geology, meteorology, astronomy, and oceanography. Problem-solving and decision-making will be stressed as well as interpretation of maps, graphs, tables, and charts in each of these areas. The scientific method and the development of scientific thought is emphasized in connecting key concepts involving the earth's composition, structure, processes, history, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and its position in space. Major topics of study include plate tectonics, the rock cycle, Earth history, the oceans, weather, climate, and the solar system and universe. A primary goal of these objectives is to prepare students for making informed decisions in matters involving the earth, its natural resources, and space.
Class Expectations
Instructional activities in my classroom will vary. You are expected to alway put forth your best effort in completing assignments and in learning concepts. If you begin to experience difficulty, let me know immediately!
You are expected to complete classwork and homework assignments. You will follow directions the first time they are given and will use appropriate manners and language with peers and adults. You need to attend class daily and be on time. You should maintain an I Can attitude.Let me know immediately when you do not understand what I am teaching. The concepts in Earth Science can be difficult. As this is an SOL class, I will find another way to teach anything you do not understand. I believe that talking is one of the best ways to learn new information, so be sure to communicate with me throughout the year.
Grading Scale
Grades will be based on a variety of assignments including classwork, homework, quizzes, tests, and projects.
