DESIGNING YOUR OWN WEB SITE USING WORD 97 - Mrs. Cameron McKinley
NOTE: To see your page as you design it you can go to FILE menu and choose WEB PAGE PREVIEW
1. Open Microsoft Word 97
2. Choose FILE menu and NEW
3. Go to WEB PAGES tab and choose BLANK WEB PAGE
(Note: I f you don't have a web page tab, you can always choose a regular document and when you save it, choose to save it as the FILE TYPE of HTML.)
SAVE THE PAGE to your folder by using FILE MENU and SAVE AS
Name it INDEX
4. Now you are ready to design your page!
5. First we will put in a title: Type in: Your Name's Web Site (use your first name only)
Highlight the text using your mouse and then use the A icon with the up arrow next to it to make it bigger.
Use the B on the toolbar to bold it.
Use the CENTER icon on the toolbar to center it.
Use the A with the color beneath it to make it a color. (Make it RED for now.)
(Make it in large type but don't use a fancy font because most web browsers can't display it. Stick to Times New Roman, Arial and Comic Sans for now) Times New Roman is easy to read.
Press ENTER 2 times when you are done.
6. Now we will put in some scrolling text (a marquee)
Choose INSERT menu and choose SCROLLING TEXT
Where it says "Sample Text" you should type in "Welcome to MY PLACE"
For the BEHAVIOR, choose ALTERNATE and it will go left and right.
Choose the background color that will work with whatever text color you choose. For this example choose a BLACK background. You can always change this later.
Now the marquee is in but it isn't moving yet but it will when we look at it in web page preview. Just select it by clicking on it and choose the text color icon to choose Blue text.
Press ENTER after the marquee so we can add a menu bar.
7. Now we will add a menu bar by adding a one row table.
Choose TABLE MENU
Choose INSERT and follow the right arrow to choose a 4 column 1 row table. That is 4 cells over on the top row. Click there and the table will be inserted into your page.
Click somewhere in the table and choose the TABLE menu and SELECT TABLE.
Then click on the CENTER icon to center it.
Then, with table still selected, click the TABLE menu and choose BORDERS and choose GRID to put lines around it.
Now make sure you are clicked inside the table and choose TABLE menu and choose TABLE SELECT TABLE
Choose TABLE MENU and TABLE PROPERTIES and choose background color of YELLOW.
Click in the first cell (box) and type HOME
Click in the second cell and type PAGE 1 and make the next cells PAGE 2 and PAGE 3
(You may change these names later depending on what you decide to put on these pages.)
Highlight all of these page names and make them the color RED.
Press ENTER
8. Now we will enter another table for your favorite LINKS.
First type MY FAVORITE LINKS and center it and press ENTER. Highlight it and change the color to RED.
Then we'll enter our table:
Choose TABLE MENU
Choose INSERT and follow the right arrow to choose a 2 column 4 row table. That is 2 cells over on the 4th row.
You may select thicker border lines if you'd like.
Click in the first cell (box) and type LINK
Click in the second cell on the top row and type DESCRIPTION
In the DESCRIPTION column type:
My favorite Search Engine
Favorite Game Site
My School Site
Now we will add the LINKS in the first column. I will use:
http://www.google.com
http://www.pbskids.org
http://www.vestavia.k12.al.us/pizitz
*You can use the links above and change them later if you'd like. Get at least one link typed in and we will make it a real hyperlink. You can also copy and paste a link from the web for this.
To make a link a hyperlink:
Highlight the text of the link you typed in.
Choose INSERT menu and choose HYPERLINK
You should see the link address in the box at the top.
For real web pages addresses, you should make sure that you UNCHECK "Use relative path for hyperlink"
Click OK
It will change the font and text size and make it a hyperlink.
Do this for all of your links.
(You can make any text or picture a hyperlink, but you would have to type in the link where you want the text to go to make it work in the Hyperlink menu box.)
9. Now we will make the table background color change.
Click inside your LINK table.
Choose TABLE menu and select TABLE PROPERTIES.
For the BACKGROUND, choose BRIGHT GREEN.
10. Now we will change the background color of the entire page.
Choose the FORMAT menu.
Choose BACKGROUND
Choose BLACK.
(For other pages you can choose pictures or backgrounds you find on the web. Just remember that if the backgrounds are too detailed or too large in file size, they will take to long to load or might not work on some browsers.)
11. Click underneath the last table and press enter. (Make sure you are NOT INSIDE the table but UNDER it.
First type in: Animated GIFs I made (make sure you change the font color to red because black will not show on our black background.)
Now we will add a third table to put in two digital pictures or animations.
Choose TABLE MENU
Choose INSERT and follow the right arrow to choose a 2 column 1 row table. That is 2 cells over on the 1st row. Click there and the table will be inserted into your page.
Click somewhere in the table and choose the TABLE menu and SELECT TABLE.
Then click on the CENTER icon to center it.
This table will NOT have borders or a background color.
We will insert a picture here. This picture will be an animated GIF that you make with the digital camera and the GIF ANIMATION software.
SAVE YOUR WORK and we will add the pictures and animations later.
12. Now we will add some background music.
Choose INSERT menu.
Choose BACKGROUND SOUND.
Choose PROPERTIES.
Click BROWSE to find the sound you want.
After you select it make sure both boxes on the right are checked (use relative path and copy to document folder) and choose the number of times you want the song to play by choosing a number in the LOOP box.
(We will use the sounds folder on the lab network to find the canyon.mid midi file. Later, you can search the sounds or the Internet to find other sound files you might like to use. Remember that sounds make web pages take longer to load so you probably don't want one on every page. Midi files usually work best for these web pages. I have lots of links where you can get these sound files.)

Type the word home in the box and click OK.
Now when you click the words TOP OF PAGE it will take you to the top of this page where the word HOME is shown.
SAVE THE FILE.
18. Changing the color of hyperlinks:
Sometimes you might need to change the color of hyperlinks or change the color they turn after they are used to make sure they work with the background you've chosen.
Choose the FORMAT menu and choose TEXT COLOR.
Here you can change the colors. The BLUE works fine for Hyperlinks but the violet doesn't work for visited links. It doesn't show up on the black. Change this to PINK for now. That will work on all the backgrounds we've chosen for our page. (Yellow won't work because our top table has a yellow background)
You probably will want to change the body text color to RED instead of BLACK since we have a black background.
Well... YOU'VE DONE IT! CONGRATULATIONS. You've created your own web site. Now you are ready to practice what you've learned by finishing pages 1, 2, and 3. Here are some ideas for what to put on them:
PAGE ONE - MY FAMILY ( Use pictures and text)
PAGE TWO- MY HOBBIES (Use pictures and text)
PAGE THREE- MORE OF MY FAVORITE LINKS (put some favorite Internet Sites you like and maybe have your favorite song playing in the background) or have some of your animations or pictures you've taken and call it MY ART GALLERY!
