Mrs. Bahr's News Week of April 13, 2009 Hello Parents. I hope all of you had a wonderful Spring Break with your children! The time off was a good thing for all of us. We had time to relax, and now are ready to buckle down to prepare and review for our upcoming Stanford 10 testing. It involves a great deal of listening. On this test, there are times when the teacher may only say something one time. Therefore, it is imperative that the children be alert and listen carefully. It will be extremely important that the students are well rested as these tests demand a great deal of attention on the part of the students. I also ask that students eat an especially good and nutritious breakfast on the mornings they will be testing. We will take a snack break in the middle of the testing, so please send in a nutritious snack that your child will enjoy. You may want to make the snack a bit heartier than usual just to give that extra boost! Please do not schedule any appointments during the three days of testing. We will test on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday during the morning, but will also review and prepare during the afternoon. I would like to offer a big thank you to our Room Mothers for planning and coordinating the wonderful spring activities for our class! Our spring celebration was fabulous! Our parents are so creative and always seem to come up with a new twist to make our celebrations extra special! Reading This week we will be busy taking our Unit 5 Reading Test and will review for the Stanford 10 test. There will be no new stories this week. We will have spelling words that review some of the phonics sounds that will appear on the unit test. Book It Forms must be turned in by the end of this week. I am planning a Pizza party next Thursday for the kids who participated each month. I will provide two pieces of pizza and a drink for each child. We will eat in our classroom that day during our lunch time. Students are still free to bring or purchase their own lunch, but as I said, I will have pizza for them. It looks like all of our students will make the goal! Science We have finished our unit on weather. I sent the tests home right before Spring Break, so hopefully you have had a chance to see them. Social Studies Today we began our new unit on Economics. We will be learning about Goods and Services, Needs and Wants, Bartering and Trading, Natural, Capital, and Human Resources, as well as the roles of consumers and producers. Projects Students may take home their China projects. We have had a beautiful display in the hallway! Math The students have begun a new unit on Measurement. Please e mail Mrs. Jalomo if you have any questions regarding math class. Please check out the websites listed under our Second Grade web page. There are great activities for the kids!
