We would like to introduce you to a wonderful resource - The New York Public Library.

As a New York state resident, you are eligible to receive a New York Public Library card, which provides you access to numerous databases that may be helpful to you in both your personal and academic life.

If you already have a Monroe County library card, that's terrific, but you need a New York Public Library card in order to take advantage of the huge range of databases that the New York Public Library has to offer.

If you would like to apply for a New York Public Library card, you may access the New York Public Library website by clicking the link below and then following the directions. However, if you prefer, you may see a library staff member who would be happy to assist you in applying for the library card.

Below we have listed some of the databases you might find particularly helpful and interesting. In order to access the databases, click on the link below for the New York Public Library homepage and then under Books and Materials, click on "articles and databases." Once on that page, click on "Databases available from home," which is located on the left side of the page. This will give you a list of all of the databases that you will be able to access.

Ancient and Medieval History Online - This database provides a balanced, global view of the ancient world as it explores six ancient centers of civilization—Africa, Egypt, Greece, Rome, Mesoamerica, and Mesopotamia.

Consulta - Provides access to a comprehensive collection of Spanish-language materials.

Custom Newspapers - Searchable full-text of 300 plus newspapers, both national and international.

Electronic Enlightenment - Electronic Enlightenment is a database which provides unrivalled online access to 18th-century primary sources that can be searched or browsed as a complete collection.

Facts on File History Database Center - Comprised of the World History Online, Ancient History & Culture, American Women's History, African-American History & Culture and American Indian History & Culture, this interface allows us to search across all five history databases.

Fiction Connection - Use this readers advisory tool to discover titles similar to books you already enjoy.

Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia - The Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia is based on the text of the Academic American Encyclopedia.

Grolier Online - Includes access to the Encyclopedia Americana, New Book of Knowledge and Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia as well as Roget's II: The New Thesaurus and the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition.

History Resource Center: World - A comprehensive collection of reference, full-text articles from scholarly publications, an array of primary sources, and images, maps and charts which provide expansive geographic and chronlogic research materials for the study of world history from ancient Europe to Latin America and from the Far East to the Renaissance.

Lands and Peoples - An encyclopedia of countries, cultures, and current events geared to student readers.

Learning Express Library - Test preparation materials and interactive practice exams that will help people improve their scores on academic, civil service, military, and professional licensing and certification exams.

Modern World History Online - Covers the important civilizations and cultures of world history from prehistoric times through the modern era. Topical entries, biographies, maps, primary source documents, and timelines provide a detailed and comparative view of the people, places, and events that have defined world history.

New Book of Popular Science - A science encyclopedia with over 400 articles geared to student readers.

Opposing Viewpoints - Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center is a comprehensive full-text database that provides a wide scope of knowledge for nearly 5,000 current social topics in the forms of primary source documents, statistics, websites and multimedia, including its viewpoint articles that present the pros and cons of the issue.

Science Online - This database covers fields of Animal Anatomy, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science, General Science, Genetics and Cell Biology, Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Life Science, Marine Science, Physical Science, Physics, Space & Astronomy, and Weather & Climate.

Teen Health and Wellness - Provides students with comprehensive curricular support and self-help tools on topics including diseases, drugs, alcohol, nutrition, fitness, mental health, diversity, family life, and more.

What Do I Read Next? - Suggests new fiction and nonfiction titles to read.

World Book Online Reference Center- Comprehensive access to encyclopedia articles, web links, periodical articles, videos, maps and more.
