English Department Philosophy and Activities: The English Department strives to relate the study of English to a wide variety of learning experiences. We incorporate into our program opportunities to improve skills in grammar, spelling, vocabulary, writing, research, reading, listening, thinking, speaking, and technology. We place a high priority on the writing process. Rough drafts allow students to refine ideas and make revisions based on careful proofreading, editing, and teacher suggestions. Our aim is to encourage students to express themselves and to learn grammatical, mechanical, and organizational skills through written application. Sixth Grade English Policies: TESTS 1. English test days are Tuesday and Friday. Material will be reviewed during class on the day before the test. Missing the review day does NOT exempt students from taking the test on the assigned day. You may have a quiz on any day of the week. 2. Test dates will be posted in advance on my homework page. CLASS WORK AND HOMEWORK 3. All writing is to be done on wide-ruled loose-leaf paper or in a spiral notebook. All handouts and/or worksheets are to be kept in the student's pocket folder. 4. Any student who comes to class without homework during the first three nine week grading periods will be given a zero for that day's homework score. The student may bring it in later that day or the next school day for half credit. Half credit is better than a zero! The zero will remain if the work is not turned in the following day. No half credit will be given the last nine weeks of school. 5. Students should always write assignments in his or her planner even though homework assignments are posted on the school's website, http://www.vestavia.k12.al.us/pizitz/. Not all changes make it to the website in time so all assignments, directions, and due dates given in class are correct and final. IF YOU ARE ABSENT 6. Absent students have two days per absence to complete any classwork or homework missed. THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO TESTS OR ASSIGNMENTS PREVIOUSLY ASSIGNED. If possible get the assignment from a friend or from the school's website to keep from getting behind. MAKE-UP WORK 7. Upon returning to school from an absence, students should check the assignment board to see what assignments were missed. This is the responsibility of the student. A zero will be given for any work not turned in by the designated make-up time. Make-up work must be checked during homeroom, before school, and/or after school so new material will not be missed. Absences should be avoided unless vitally necessary. It is difficult for a student to do make-up work and current work. When a student has a special pre-excused absence approved by Mr. Miles, the student is responsible for getting all assignments that will be given during the absence before leaving; these are DUE ON THE DAY THE STUDENT RETURNS TO SCHOOL. SUPPLIES 8. All students need to have the recommended supplies, materials, and homework in class each day. The following supplies and materials are recommended for class each day: a binder with plenty of wide-ruled loose-leaf paper, blue/black pens, red pens, pencils, highlighters, the Holt Reader, pocket folder, student planner, and a pleasure reading book. 9. We will read the following novels together throughout the school year: Surviving the Applewhites, Four Perfect Pebbles, Rules, and Marley. DAILY CLASS PROCEDURES 10. Healthy snacks are always welcome. 11. Students are to read the board, be quietly seated, and ready to begin class when the tardy bell rings. A set of textbooks for literature and grammar will be housed in the classroom for student use. The students will not be responsible for keeping up with these textbooks throughout the year. The textbooks will be available for student check-out when a student is absent or does not finish an assignment in class. Students will return the textbook the following day. If you get caught in the act of helping others, displaying a positive attitude, or excelling in English class you may receive an A-slip!! :) If you are curious about what you will be learning in English class this year, you have come to the right place.
