COMPOSING
1.   Is the subject/central idea of the composition clear and focused?
2.   Is everything in the composition about the subject?
3.   Has the writer elaborated with examples and details that "show" the reader what happened?
4.   Are there appropriate transitional phrases that connect each idea?
5.  Does the composition have a dynamic beginning, a unified middle, and a strong ending?

WRITTEN EXPRESSION
1.  Does the reader hear the writer's voice?
2.  Is the tone/attitude clear and appropriate?
3.  Is the use of vocabulary clear and specific?
4.  Are the verbs active and dynamic?
5.   Has the writer employed a variety of sentence patterns?
6.   Do the words create vivid pictures that linger in the reader's mind?

USAGE AND MECHANICS

1.  Has the writer written complete sentences  ( no fragments or run-ons)?
2.  If there are fragments, are they controlled and purposeful?
3.  Are the verb tenses correct?
4.  Is there subject-verb agreement?
5.  Is there pronoun-antecedent agreement?
6.  Has the writer punctuated correctly (commas, semicolons, colons, and end punctuation marks)?
7.  Has the writer indented each paragraph?
8.  Has the writer correctly used and spelled each word?
9.  Has the writer used capital letters correctly?
