Welcome Green Dragons,

7th Grade Civics and Economics Syllabus

Course Description: Civics involves a study of important historical documents that have impacted the creation and functioning of our local, state and national governments.  This course will focus on the rights and responsibilities, we, as citizens need to understand.  Additionally, students will develop an understanding of different economic systems.

Objectives:  The student will develop the social studies skills citizenship requires, including the ability to:

- examine and interpret primary and secondary source documents
- create and explain maps, diagrams, tables charts, graphs, and spreadsheets
- analyze political cartoons, political advertisements, pictures, and other graphic media
- distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information
- review information for accuracy, separating fact from opinion
- identify a problem and recommend solutions
- select and defend positions in writing, discussion, and debate

Prince William County School Goals: Focus on culture, geography, economics, government and diplomacy.  Present an integrated view of social sciences that will enable students to become active participants and life-long learners in a democratic society.

Required Materials:
- Three-Subject Notebook (Five Star Brand will work best)
- Colored pencils or markers
- Two highlights of different colors
- A pen
- A pencil with an eraser
- Glue Stick
- A small pair of scissors
- A container with name of the student to keep the supplies in the classroom (Pencil Box, vinyl packet, zipper-lock storage bag)
- Student Agenda

Interactive Student Notebook: A major portion of the student’s grade this year will be the Interactive Student Notebook.  The goal of the Interactive Student Notebook is to motivate students with different learning styles to express their understanding of what they have learned.  This will be accomplished through the use of color, Venn diagrams to show relationships, cartoon sketches to illustrate people and events, timelines to illustrate chronology when events occurred and numerous other strategies that allows students to graphically display what they have learned.

Homework Policy: Homework will be assigned when it is appropriate to support lessons and when independent work would be beneficial to assist the student.  Work must be completed and turned in on time so it supports the lessons the students are currently working.  Any work not turned in on time will receive a lower grade.  (1 – 3 days late = “D-“, >3 days = “F”)

Grading Policy: The report card academic grade will be based on tests, quizzes, homework, individual projects, group work, classroom participation and the Interactive Student Notebook.   Failure to complete at least 65% of all assigned work WILL result in the grade of “F” for that grading period (Prince William County School policy).  The work habit (effort) grade will be based on the timeliness of outside projects, homework assignments, and class assignments and classroom participation.  The citizenship (conduct) grade will be based on behavior in the classroom.  The grading scale is listed in the student’s agenda.

Help Sessions: Time for help sessions can be arranged for most Tuesday or Thursdays after school.  Students who stay after school for makeup work must come to school prepared to work.  After school sessions are not for students to socialize.  The infolink system with Graham Park is an excellent tool to check homework, current assignments, and projects and communicate with the teacher!  The phone number is 221-2118 (same as the school office)

Make-Up Work: Whenever a student is absent, he or she will have two school days to make-up any missed work for excused absences.  If the student is out of school for a lengthy absence, other arrangements can be made for catching up on missed assignments, the Interactive Student Notebook, quizzes and tests.  It is the responsibility of the STUDENT to keep track of all work that is due.
