DEEP RUN HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA

Orchestra Requirements

1. Students are expected to be prepared for class and in their seats on time each day.  Students must bring their instruments, spare set of strings, mute, rosin, shoulder rest (for violins and violas), rockstops for cellos, tuner/ metronome (optional), music/folders, books, pencils, and erasers to class every day.  Instruments may be rented, repaired, or bought from Harrison Music, Jan Hampton Violins, Music & Arts Center, Mercury Fine Violins Ltd., or at any other music establishment.

2. Henrico County Public Schools and Deep Run High School code of conduct will be followed at all times.  Appropriate conduct, respect, and demeanor should be observed at all times by everyone in class.

3. Students are expected to treat school facilities including, instruments, music folders, music stands, lockers, classroom, and auditorium with the highest respect and regard.  Any damages caused to the premises or instruments will result in that student’s repairing or replacing the damages.

4. Students are expected to practice every day the required amount of time needed to perform properly.  Practicing will improve and enhance the playing ability of students and will aid in the perfection of their musical performance.

5. Classroom as well as concert performances are graded.  Concert performances are the required part of the music experience. Concert dates are listed on this handout and are posted on HCPS Links.  If some of these dates are altered due to unavoidable circumstances, an alternate date will be announced in advance.  It is absolutely necessary that all students participate in these performances.  A GRADE WILL BE ASSIGNED FOR EVERY PERFORMANCE.  If your child cannot attend a performance, please notify me in writing at your earliest convenience so that an alternative assignment can be designed.

6. All orchestra students must buy Advanced Technique for Strings by Michael Allen, Robert Gillespie, and Pamela Hayes for their respective instruments.

7. All orchestra students must buy Alfred’s Essential of Music Theory (complete) by Andrew Surmani, Karen Surmani, and Morton Manus.

GRADING
Classroom Participation - 35%; Practice Record – 15%; Performance Grade – 50%

Classroom Participation – 35%
Students are expected to have the necessary material and equipment to participate in class.  This includes: instruments, pencils, erasers, music, books, and any other accessory that accommodates their playing needs [ex. – extra sets of strings, mute, rosin, cleaning cloth, shoulder rests (for the violins and the violas), rockstop (for the cellos and basses), tuner, metronome, etc.].  Gum chewing or eating in class is strictly prohibited.  Since the orchestra relies on its members for performance, everyone needs to participate with a positive attitude.  Students are expected to remain on task and non-disruptive for the tasks of the day.  Everyone plays a vital role to the group dynamic and performance.  I rely on the individuals of the group to achieve necessary goals: therefore, everyone needs to do their part in the fulfillment of our goals.  We will need to maintain positive attitudes, work hard, and have fun making music here at DRHS.

Practice Record – 15%
All students are expected to practice 180 minutes a week to properly prepare for upcoming concerts, learn and master playing skills, and achieve the necessary endurance for the rigorous practice and performance schedule of the groups.  Practice and performance records are essential.  Practice records (signed by a parent) will be checked on the last class day of the every week.  No credits will be given for missing practice records, so make sure you turn them in.

Minutes and Grades
180 & up       A
160-179 B
140-159 C
120-139 D
Below 120     F

Performance/Quiz Grades - 50%
As musicians, performances are the means by which we are measured.  With this idea in mind, each performance will also have a performance grade.  Performances include any concerts in which a student is required to attend, as well as classroom performances, playing tests and quizzes, which are used to determine the comprehension of the music.
Because we rely on the members of the orchestra for performances, it is important that we have perfect attendance for concerts and performances.  However, if there are instances that a student cannot attend a concert, advance notice is required so that I may make any necessary adjustments before the performances.  Excused absences will be considered for: illness, unavoidable medical appointments, or an emergency.  If a concert is missed and advance notice given then the absence will be excused and the student will need to complete a makeup assignment.
