Physical Science Activities for the week of February 26th This week we will be studying the Periodic Table of Elements! Before we finish the 6 weeks, you will memorize the first 36 elements, the atomic number, chemical symbol and the atomic mass weight of each. We will learn 6 new elements every class and take a quiz on them each class day. Bring your laptops each day because we will be going online to some cool websites regarding the Periodic Table. Chapter 10.1 (pg. 270) discusses the Structure of the Atom. Science Concepts to learn: 1. Parts of the Atom a)Nucleus-Proton Atomic Mass = 1 charge = +1 Neutron Atomic Mass = 1 charge = 0 b)electron- Atomic mass weight = 0 charge = -1 2. Element's name and Chemical symbol 3. The shape of the atom a)the Bohr model b)the electron cloud model 4. The meaning of "energy levels" 5. The Number of electrons in each energy level. Chapter 10.2 (pg. 276) discusses Smallers Particles of Matter 1. The definition of a Quark 2. How scientists study atoms by smashing them together 3. What a particle Accelerators is and how it works. Chapter 10.3 (pg. 278) discusses the Masses of Atoms. 1. What is meant by btomic mass. 2. What the definition of an isotope is. 3. What "average atomic mass" means Chapter 10.4 (pg. 284) discusses the Periodic Table of Elements 1. You will learn about the Periodic Table and the meanings of "groups" and "periods" 2. Learn about "Dot Diagrams" 3. Learn and be able to contrast and compare "metals," "nonmetals," and "Metaloids" 4. Learn how elements are grouped.
