Course Description
It is the goal of the Physical Education Department of E. B. Stanley Middle School to emphasize the importance of being physically fit for a lifetime by providing a diverse, active fitness program for all students. Each student is required to actively participate on a daily basis.
"In spite of the increased public awareness of the importance of physical activity, these are some alarming trends in our nation's schools. Physical Education has been drastically reduced across the nation in the past two decades. In addition, obesity and diabetes among children and adolescents is increasing while the amount of walking and bicycling is decreasing- increased academic demands, increased hours spent in sedentary activities (e.g., watching TV), and decreased opportunities for activity in schools and communities have resulted in children and youth becoming less active." ~ The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports
At E.B. Stanley, we will give every student the opportunity to be introduced to different activities in order to encourage the students to continue being active outside of school.
Class Expections
ATHLETIC shoes MUST be worn everyday for Physical Education class as well as for recess periods. Failure to wear athletic shoes will prohibit the students from participating in PE. "Rocket Dogs," or similiar shoes, are not acceptable, safe shoes for PE. All athletic shoes must be properly laced and tied so shoes will remain on the student's feet. The athletic shoes must have nonmarking soles. Shoes that leave black marks on the floor will not count as appropriate shoes. Repeatedly missing class due to inappropriate dress will lower their grade for the nine weeks. Students must be dressed properly for activity (e.g. boys' pants MUST be secured around their waist at all times).
THREE written notes from the parent/guardian will be accepted per nine weeks excusing the student from Physical Education class. Any additional days missed will be unexcused and will result in the nine weeks grade being lowered. Doctor's excuses will be accepted.
Sixth and seventh grade students will be assigned either a passing grade or a failing grade based on their participation and results of written and/or skills tests for each grading period. Eighth grade students will be assigned a letter grade based on their participation and results of written and/or skills tests for each grading period.
