UNIT TITLE: SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION
DAILY FOCUS: IDENTIFYING & DEFINING THE COMPONENTS OF A GOOD
             EXPERIMENT
SOL(s):     LS1 (A-J)

OBJECTIVES: The student will:
            A. identify and define each of the (all 6)
               "COMPONENTS OF A GOOD EXPERIMENT".
            B. read several scenarios depicting students
               conducting (doing) experiments, then identify
each (all 6) of the "COMPONENTS OF A GOOD
EXPERIMENT", and suggest ways to improve
               (correct) the experiment.
            C. identify each of the "COMPONENTS OF A GOOD
               EXPERIMENT" for the problem:
HOW DOES CHANGING THE TYPE OF WATER - TAP
WATER, DISTILLED WATER, RAIN WATER &
SALT WATER - AFFECT IT'S pH?
            D. read several scenarios, then write a
               hypothesis for each.
            E. read several scenarios, then draw an
               experimental design diagran for each.

CLASS ASSIGNMENT:
ACTIVITY #1: The students will copy and discuss the
following notes on the "COMPONENTS OF A
                 GOOD  EXPERIMENT (ALL 6):

ACTIVITE #2: The students will complete a worksheet in
which they will identify the "COMPONENTS
OF A GOOD EXPERIMENT (ALL 6)" found in 5
                 scenarios depicting students conducting
experiments, and suggest ways to improve
or correct the experiments. The first three
will be done orally as a class and the last
two will be done as independently practice
                 (by your self).

ACTIVITY #3: The students will work in their cooperative
learning teams to identify the "COMPONENTS
OF A GOOD EXPERIMENT (all 6)" and conduct
(do) the experiment for the problem:

HOW DOES CHANGING THE TYPE OF WATER - TAP
WATER, DISTILLED WATER, RAIN WATER, &
SALT WATER - AFFECT IT'S pH?

ACTIVITY #4: The students will work in their cooperative
learning teams to write a hypothesis for
                 each of our 5 scenarios.

ACTIVITY #5: The students will work in their
cooperative learning teams to draw an
experimental design diagram for each of
                 our 5 scenarios.

HOMEWORK: FRIDAY-MONDAY, 10/21-23/02

      A. Study all notes on the "COMPONENTS OF A GOOD
EXPERIMENT". You must know each of the 6 components
by name and the definition of each. YOUR PARENT OR
GUARDIAN MUST ASK YOU QUESTIONS AFTER YOU HAVE
STUDIED AND MASTERED YOUR NOTES.YOUR TEST IS ON
         MONDAY & TUESDAY !!!!

                NOTES ON MONDAY & TUESDAY, 10/21-23/02 !!!!
BE PREPARED TO DO YOUR BEST (100 A+) !!!!
      C. Any hypotheses and/or experimental designs that
are not completed in class are to be completed at
         home.
      D. Buy a bag of either baby or giant lima bean seeds
that will be used wednesday to do an experiment.
      E. DON'T FORGET TO BRING YOUR FRESH WATER pH KIT &
TEXTBOOK EVERYDAY. THEY ARE NEEDED TO COMPLETE
         YOUR pH EXPERIMENT. (ACTIVITY #3)
