About Music at RVES
Every student at Rhea Valley Elementary School attends music class every four days. The textbook used is Making Music by Silver Burdett and Ginn. Recordings, videos, games, manipulatives, and instruments supplement the textbook. Students explore the many elements of music (rhythm, harmony, form, tone, color, melody), compare the music of America with that of other countries, and learn musical skills to help them perform the music they have discovered.
Singing is a very important part of music class, but children also have opportunities to play rhythm instruments and melody instruments. Students learn about composers by listening to their music and hearing stories about their lives.
The objectives for all music classes are from the Standards of Learning for Music adopted by the Virginia Board of Education. Many core area SOLs are also reinforced in music class through songs and various activities.
About Me!
Hello! My name is Mr. Egan. This is my fifth year at Rhea Valley and I am LOVING it! The picture above was taken at Disney World. My wife Allison (a first grade teacher at High Point Elementary) and I traveled there after being married on June 23, 2007.
Before coming to RVES I taught two years at High Point Elementary. Before coming to Washington County, I taught in Smyth County Schools for three years. I attended East Tennesee State University and received both a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education and Master of Education Degree in Elementary Education. I am certified to teach Vocal/General Music in PreK-12 and also am certified to teach PK-6 in the classroom. If you ever have any questions please feel free to contact me via email or phone.
Performances
One of the best ways for students to experience music is through the preparation of a performance. Here at Rhea Valley we perform two programs per school year:
December: First Grade
March: Fourth Grade
