Guidelines For Writing a Book Review 6th, 7th, and 8th Grades 1. At the top right-hand side of the page: Your name and the date. 2. Skip a line and write: Title and Author 3. Skip a line. Paragraph 1: *First Sentence: Begin with a lead that grabs our attention: a. Pull a short quote from the book. b. Point out a terrific part. *Next 4-6 sentences: Summarize the plot. In your summary identify the genre: ie- fantasy, historical fiction, sci.-fi., etc. 4. Paragraph 2: The following suggestions below will help you develop points to support how you felt about the book. Address at least 4 in your review. a. What problems does the main character face? Do you feel these problems are realistic? Why? Why not? b. Describe three or four settings and show how each influences the events and characters’ actions and decisions. c. In real life, events and people can change a character. How did an important event or person change the character at the end of the book? d. What about the main character is realistic in terms of your experiences? e. Did you connect to a character or event? Why? f. Do you enjoy this style of writing? Why? Why not? Give examples. 5. Paragraph 3: Do you or don’t you recommend the book? Give reasons to back up your opinion. What are the realistic themes and issues in the book and how it relates to the plot (give at least 3). The more details you give, the higher your grade! Make us want to read the book without giving away the end! Length: Minimum of 1 ½ pages typed and double-spaced in a 14 inch font. Each paragraph MUST be 6-8 sentences. Rough draft must be stapled to the final draft. No handwritten, final draft pages will be accepted.
