Class Information Booklet

Homework

Homework for my classroom is assigned each Monday through Thursday, and should take about 30 – 40 minutes each night to complete.  Students use their “Purple Folder” to take work to and from school.

INCENTIVE:

Students will receive recognition for assignments and signatures turned in on time.  Students who turn in all homework on time for the entire quarter will become members of the 100% Homework Club and will receive a certificate each quarter for their work well done.

Reading:

Research says that children become better readers by reading at their ability level.  Students will read for a minimum of 15 minutes each night.  Students will keep track of their reading minutes and get a parent initial.

Due Dates for Assignments

Classroom assignments are generally due the next school day after they are assigned.  Class time is usually given to complete assignments.  Students may need to finish an assignment at home if it is not completed during the given class work time.  This is in addition to the normal assigned homework (reading, multiplication facts, etc.).

“Purple Folder”

Work from the previous week and notes from school will come home for you to look at in the folder.  The folder is organized with two pockets.  On the right side you will find work, which is to stay at home.  The right side of the folder will be for homework and work that needs to be corrected or completed and returned to school.

Agenda

The agenda is used daily to write down classroom and homework assignments.  Please check this over and sign nightly, Monday through Thursday.

Absences

When students are absent, they are responsible for making up the work.  Students will have an “Absent Folder” on their desk when they return.  Some classroom activities cannot be done at home (group work, experiments, in-class games, buddy class activities, etc.), so regular attendance is encouraged.

Effort

Students are always expected to turn in their best work.  Students are highly encouraged to correct low scores (D or F) to make sure they understand what was being taught.  Scores will be raised one grade.

Spelling Words and Tests

Our classroom uses the Harcourt spelling book.  It is a phonics-based program.  The students will have assignments Monday through Wednesday.  The test will be on Thursday.  The test will consist of 15 to 20 core words, review words, and possibly challenge words.

Water Bottles

Especially during the warm days of school it would be great if students would bring and use a plastic water bottle with a spill-proof lid.  This avoids our 20 some students standing in line for our two drinking fountains. (water only)

Student Number

Each child will be assigned a student number.  I would like for your child to write that number in the upper right hand corner of each assignment.  This number will be used for identifying a student’s work to speed up the filing process.

Ways to Help Your Child At Home

·      Show interested in your child’s work.   Discuss papers that come home. This communicates the idea that education is important.  It also encourages your child to do well in school.

·      Monitor television programs.  Television can be instructional and relaxing when used properly.

·      Talk with your child everyday about school and other interests.

·      Make sure that your child gets plenty of sleep.  Encourage exercise and good nutrition.

·      Instruct your child to complete homework after school or early in the evening.

·      Read with your child.  Discuss what you read.

·      Encourage your child to read and write often.

·      Provide materials such as: paper, pencils, pencil sharpener, crayon/markers, glue and scissors.
