Supplies for this class:

Three-ring binder with notebook paper and dividers
Several No. 2 pencils. Two should be left at school.
Black or blue ink pens. One should be left at school.
Highlighters, any color
Post-it notes, any brand, color, or style. 3” x 3” or notes cut to that size
Index cards (3 ½ x 5), about 50. These may be left at school.
Box of Kleenex
Students will also be required to keep a calendar in notebook; this will be supplied.

Optional supplies that are helpful but not required:

Pencil-top erasers and/or large eraser

Assignments

August 14

Today is the first day of class. We will make introductions, read and answer questions about the syllabus, create some class rules, discuss procedures, and write a letter. Sample friendly letter handout. "This Is My Letter To The World."

August 15

We will get assigned seats, go over the materials list, assign textbooks, see an overview of our course work, and begin a map assignment.

August 16

We will complete and review the map assignment, we will read and write notes from the Introduction to Unit 1, we will create a timeline of events in Unit 1.

August 19

Period 3 will write notes about the History of the English Language. Maps will be returned. Set up notebooks. Period 4 will complete a fill-in-the-blank review for the notes from Friday. We will begin Beowulf.

August 20

Period 3 will review notes, answer questions about the information in the notes in Part I of a Handout.
Period 4 will read Beowulf and complete a written assignment on this reading. We will also complete a vocabulary review (pg 38).PowerPoint presentation on the comma.

August 21

Period 3 will read pp. 34, 35, 38, and 39 in the textbook in order to complete Part 2 of a Handout. Practice quiz answers to gauge comprehension. Review Beowulf vocabulary if time allows.
Period 4 will continue the reading of the epic Beowulf. Oral questions to gauge understanding. The goal is to finish reading all three battles. Students will also define and give examples for literary terms: epic, alliteration, kenning, caesura, imagery, in medias res.

August 22

Period 3 will read Beowulf (the first two chapters). Oral questions to check for comprehension
Period 4 will finish reading Beowulf and will complete a review of the story. Test on Beowulf (poem only) is Friday.

August 23

Period 3 will complete a T-chart to find examples of kenning, caesura, imagery, and alliteration in the first two chapters of Beowulf. We will write these examples on the board and talk about them.
Period 4 will complete a test over Beowulf (the poem). We will read a poem and review writing rules following the test.

August 26

Period 3 will finish the T-chart from Friday. We will read The Battle With Grendel and answer questions about it.
Period 4 will read and write notes on The Seafarer. We will read the biography of Geoffrey Chaucer and write preparatory notes about Canterbury Tales. If time allows, we will see a Powerpoint presentation on comma use.

August 27

Period 3 will add to the T-chart. We will read the Monsters' Lair and The Battle With Grendel's Mother. We will answer questions about these chapters from Beowulf. We will identify imagery, kenning, alliteration, and caesura.
Period 4 will begin The Canterbury Tales. We will read and discuss the biography of Chaucer. We will read the beginning of the Prologue and the Knight. We will answer questions about the reading. We will learn how to write a diamante poem and write a diamante for the Knight.

August 28

Period 3 will review the reading from yesterday. We will also read, review, and practice vocabulary from page 38. We will write sentences that use the words correctly (six terms - writhing, purge, loathsome, reparation, solace, and massive). We will read The Last Battle.

Period 4 will finish the diamante poems and share them in class. We will use a side-by-side text to read about several characters from the Canterbury Tales today. We will analyze the readings for direct and indirect characterization (see page 95).

August 29

Period 3 will finish reading The Last Battle. We will make corrections in a vocabulary assignment.

Period 4 will see a powerpoint presentation about the Middle Ages. We will write notes and clarify details. We will complete a data chart for Chaucer.

August 30

Period 3 will complete the questions for The Last Battle and The Farewell. We will read and analyze the reading for main idea, specific details, and traits of Anglo-Saxon poetry.
Period 4 will complete pages 119-120 and the Data Retrieval Chart.

September 3

Period 3 will hear a presentation from Guidance Department today. If time is left in class, we will review for the Beowulf test (Thursday).
Period 4 will review Chaucer biography, characters in the Canterbury Tales, and The Middle Ages powerpoint from last week. We will read The Pardner's Tale. We will produce a persuasive essay that will be presented orally.

September 4

Today is the first Club Day for this year.

Period 3 will complete a study guide for the Beowulf test (test is tomorrow).
Period 4 will reread The Pardoner's Tale and answer questions about this story from The Canterbury Tales. We will also complete an art project.

September 5

Period 3 will take the Beowulf test. If time allows, we will read a poem from the Anglo-Saxon era.
Period 4 will complete The Canterbury Tales coat of arms. We will see a powerpoint on The Canterbury Tales and Middle Ages.

September 6

Period 3 will complete the test from Thursday. We will review literary terms from the Anglo-Saxon period. We will begin The Middle Ages on Monday.
Period 4 will practice paraphrase and paragraph development. Looking ahead, on Monday we will read "Federigo's Falcon" and review for a quiz.

September 9

Period 3 will complete the test from Thursday since several students were out of class on Friday due to a field trip. We will begin the Middle Ages if time allows.
Period 4 will complete the paraphrase practice and practice paragraph development. We will read "Federigo's Falcon," (Friday's assignment) due to Friday's field trip involving several student.

September 10

Period 3 will practice note-taking skills in a Powerpoint presentation. Lecture about hints or suggestions on the best way to take notes (What do you do when you can't keep up with the teacher?). We will write notes about The Canterbury Tales.
Period 4 will read Federigo's Falcon, discuss the frame story, identify examples of irony, make inferences about chivalry as presented in the story.

September 11

Period 3 will finish notes on The Canterbury Tales. We will read the biography of Chaucer. We will define frame tale, irony, characterization (direct/indirect).
Period 4 will use a story started to create a story along the lines of Federigo's Falcon. We will read (or begin) Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

September 12

Period 3 will have a quiz on The Canterbury Tales powerpoint. We will repeat the definition and application of terms from yesterday. We will begin reading The Canterbury Tales.
Period 4 will read Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. We will share the story starter stories from Wednesday.

September 13

Today is Early Release (Fair Day)

Period 3 will create a timeline using notes from yesterday.
Period 4 will create an icon for "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight"

September 16

Period 3 will review the Beowulf test. We will also read the first character from The Canterbury Tales Prologue. We will practice character analysis using direct and indirect characterization. We will complete a character analysis for homework.
Period 4 will write about Sir Gawain and the Green Knight in an analysis of this medieval romance. We will write notes, answer questions, and write details about the romance.

September 17

Period 3 will review homework assignment from Monday. We will make additions and corrections. We will divide up into small groups to analyze additional characters.
Period 4 will review for a test with the following activities: Canterbury Tales Jeopardy, Powerpoint about Federigo's Falcon, and a Venn Diagram. We will compare answers on the Venn Diagram and add information as needed. Test is Thursday.

September 18

Period 3 will work in small groups to analyze characters from The Canterbury Tales. We will also get Progress Reports.
Period 4 will complete the test review. We will also discuss the next assignment, a novel (A Lesson Before Dying).

September 19

Period 3 will finish the character analysis for The Canterbury Tales Prologue.
Period 4 will complete and assessment. We will also review the reading assignments for the novel.

September 20

Period 3 will complete character analysis for The Canterbury Tales (see handout).
Period 4 will begin the novel. We will answer questions about the story and write an opinion paragraph. We will also complete both oral and silent reading. Please adhere to reading schedule.

September 23

Period 3 will play Canterbury Tales Jeopardy in order to review character analysis.
Period 4 will write about "community" as this concept relates to the novel, A Lesson Before Dying. Reading from specific passages in Chapters 1-3. List and discuss characters. Reminder to finish Chapters 1-6 by Wednesday.

September 24

Period 3 will complete the Study Guide for Wednesday's test over The Canterbury Tales.
Period 4 will practice writing from a thesis statement in the library. Reminder! Make sure to have read Chapters 1-6 in the novel for Wednesday.

September 25

Period 3 will have the test over The Canterbury Tales.
Period 4 will have a reading quiz and will write about A Lesson Before Dying.

September 26

In Period 3, we will read The Pardoner's Tale.

Club Day

Period 3 will read The Pardoner's Tale.
Period 4 will have a reading quiz on Chapters 7-11. Students may use the rest of the class time for reading.

Homecoming Week

Period 3 will complete a written assignment for The Pardoner's Tale (analysis, pg 100 handout, of archetypal element)s. We will read an author's biography.
Period 4 will review both reading quizzes. We will analyze the theme of futility in the novel by rereading passages from Chapter 8. We will also examine Chapters 15 and 18 more closely. Reading quiz #3 tomorrow.

October 1

Period 3 will read and analyze "Federigo's Falcon."
Period 4 will have a reading quiz for Chapters 12-18.

October 2

Period 3 will complete a Venn Diagram to compare/contrast the frame stories (The Pardoner's Tale and Federigo's Falcon).
Period 4 will see a video clip from A Lesson Before Dying. We will have time to read the novel as well.

October 3

Period 3 will read 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight." We will write notes about chivalry and the archetypal elements in this story.
Period 4 will see a video clip of the novel. We will also read a chapter in the novel and discuss the concept of cultural hero and the pre-Civil Rights south.

October 4

Period 3 will finish "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight." We will complete a creative activity related to this story.
Period 4 will meet today only briefly due to Homecoming activities.

October 7

Period 3 will review for a Unit test over the Medieval readings (Canterbury Tales, Federigo's Falcon, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
Period 4 will complete a written assignment related to the novel.

October 8

Period 3 will review for a Unit test and complete a review of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
Period 4 will review the last set of readings for the novel. The final quiz is tomorrow (last four chapters). The test over the novel is Thursday, October 10.

Period 3 will review for a test.(test is tomorrow),
Period 4 will complete part of the assessment for the novel and will see a clip of the video for the novel.

Period 3 will practice writing thesis statements and review ways to write the introductory paragraph.

Period 3 will write notes about the research process. We will see a powerpoint on suggestions and tips on writing thesis statements.
Period 4 will begin library research with goals for each day. We have three days for reading and notetaking (today, Thursday, and Friday).

October 17

Early Release today

Period 3 will choose a research topic.
Period 4 will work in the library (read, write notes, etc.) for the second day.

October 18

Period 3 will have a lecture about note taking. Students will choose one note taking format to use for the research paper.
Period 4 will work in the library (read, write notes, etc.) for the third day.

October 21

Period 3 will see a brief powerpoint, "Ready, Set, GO" about beginning a research paper. Students will finish in the library with preliminary reading and learning how to access academic sites.
Period 4 will work in the library (read, write notes, etc.) for the fourth day.

October 22

Period 3 will work in the library to take notes and create a source sheet.
Period 4 will work in the library for the final day.

October 23

Period 4 will see a powerpoint about plagiarism. We will see many examples of plagiarism and determine the usual penalties for plagiarism at the high school and college level.

October 28

Period 3 will meet in the classroom to see examples of thesis statements. We will end by writing our own thesis statement and turning it in for a grade.
Period 4 will write the first draft of the essay with emphasis on the thesis statement. We will write a clear thesis statement and turn it in for a grade.

Period 3 will get graded thesis statements back with comments. We will see a powerpoint about How to Cite Sources in Text.
Period 4 will continue to work on the rough draft. The first two pages to include in-text citations will be turned in today.

Period 3 will see examples of notebook and note card methods of taking better notes. A handout that explains each method will be used.

Period 3 and 4 will create an art project for competition. We will work on the research paper rough draft.

Period 3 will see a powerpoint about MLA rules and some tips for writing the research paper.
Period 4 will continue to write the rough draft.

Period 3 will begin writing the rough draft and will have an opportunity to clarify any part of the assignment that is still unclear. We will meet in the library on Wednesday to continue our research paper rough draft.
Period 4 will continue to write the rough draft. We will review the writing rubric for this assignment and get reminders of important paper due dates for the next week.

January 14, 2014

Period 2 will meet for the first time today. We will review the syllabus, go over the assignments, and review and discuss policies and expectations.

Period 3 will begin the poetry unit. We will read two English sonnets and review the description of this poem type. The goal is to be able to read and understand the sonnet's theme and to write a statement about what the sonnet says about that topic.

January 15

Period 2 will see a powerpoint about the history of the English language. We will read pages from the textbook and write notes during a lecture. We will work in groups to complete a review of the information learned. We will label and discuss a map of the British Isles.

Period 3 will set up the poetry notebooks today. We will read about ballads and listen to a modern ballad, "Streets of Laredo" performed by Marty Robbins. We will listen to a Scottish ballad and identify the similarities between the two ballads.

January 16

Two hour delay for weather

Period 2 will review the history of the English language (handout). We will read about the epic, epic conventions, and see examples of epic poetry. We will complete Part 2 (epics) on the handout and check the answers. We will color our maps.

Period 3 will read about carpe diem poetry. We will define and read examples of this poem type.

January 17

Period 2 will read the background for the epic and apply understanding to the story of Beowulf. We will review alliteration, kenning, simile. We will read and discuss the first battle in Beowulf. We will complete review questions about the first battle.

Period 3 will go to the library to complete an analysis of the poem "Carpe Diem."

January 20

Period 2 will review the first battle and read the second battle in Beowulf. We will also read, review, and discuss literary terms for this unit. We will complete review questions in part.

Period 3 will read and discuss the Italian sonnet. Reminder: Acrostic poem is due by Friday, January 24. We will practice assigning rhyme scheme and meter to samples of poems. These are added to the poetry notebook.

Period 2 will read and analyze The Seafarer. We will identify and find examples of alliteration, kenning, metaphor. We will review for Monday's test.

February 3

Period 2 will complete the test. We will begin the Middle Ages unit (Chaucer, page 90).

Period 3 will work on The Lamb and The Tyger.

February 4

Period 2 will view a powerpoint (Canterbury Tales) and write notes. Each person will be assigned a pilgrim. We will create a slide for one pilgrim. We will read the intro to the Prologue (setting, theme of rebirth, plan for pilgrimage). We will listen to the same piece read in Middle English.

Period 3 will complete a poetry assessment (five questions). We will discuss issues with research papers if we have time.

February 5

Period 2 will finish slides for Canterbury Tales pilgrims. We will also complete a comma review with a powerpoint.

Period 3 will review the poetry assessment from yesterday.

February 6

Period 2 will see more of the Canterbury Tales powerpoint. We will finish the comma practice and start checking and discussing this assignment.

Period 3 will read passages of the Introduction (1625-1798) to the next unit.

February 7

Period 2 will read The Pardoner's Tale. We will answer questions about this allegory.

Period 3 will write notes about the Introduction.

Period 2 will finish and check questions from The Pardoner's Tale. We will define and discuss allegory, alliteration, the bubonic plague. We will see slides of pilgrims that each student made last week.

Period 2 will read a portion of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. We will discuss aspects of the legend and the concept of chivalry.

Period 3 will read John Donne's bio and his poem "Death Be Not Proud." We will analyze and write about this poem.

Period 2 will read more of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. We will summarize the plot and answer comprehension questions (orally).
