My Philosophy of Education:
Education is an unalienable right of all. To this end, I believe that all children can learn. Some may need more attention and more time than their classmates may. Others may need to be taught in a different way. It is a teacher's responsibility to help that student learn. Anything that a student takes with them should be rewarded through positive reinforcement. Expectations of individuals should not be based on the expectations of a group. My primary goals are critical, creative, and cooperative thinking skill; however, I also believe that basic skills are the building blocks to help students achieve the higher order thinking skills. One of my goals is to instill a love of learning. I will teach and practice mutual respect, in and out of my classroom. There are certain expectations that I have of my students, respect being the key. They should respect me, they should respect each other, and most importantly they should respect themselves. When said expectations are not fulfilled, discipline procedures will begin, of which consistency is fundamental. I will also practice unconditional positive regard. No matter what a student does, I will never love them any less--and my students will know this through word and deed. I believe that children should be taught self-esteem and things that will make them safe. I also feel that service learning is a valuable and powerful tool in education. Students should leave my classroom with proficiency in computer and technology as this will better prepare them for the twenty-first century. In English, my students will be taught study skills, such as active reading and note-taking, to critically analyze the meaning of literature and discuss implications and applications, to write proficiently using Standard English (although I feel that non-standard English should be explored and respected). Grammar will be emphasized through writing and usage. I believe student assessment should vary, including tests, major projects, and essays and that response to student work should be thorough. I feel students can benefit from both a letter grade and a short paragraph detailing strengths and weaknesses, with suggestions on how it can be improved. As a teacher, I feel that I am organized and consistent, yet flexible. I actively promote student involvement and ownership. I believe in incorporating media technology into education. I also feel that it is essential to relate things discussed in the classroom to students' lives. I am energetic and enthusiastic. This passion for my students and my work will keep me constantly searching for new ideas in order to make learning exciting and evolving. One of my goals is to be a life long learner. I will continually find and use resources to make myself a better teacher. I will pursue professional development opportunities when they arise, such as National Board Certification. I feel there is unbelievable pride in the career of a professional educator. Although I am not a perfect teacher, I will strive towards that goal everyday for the rest of my life.

My Personal Mission Statement:
To be an intelligent, independent woman who controls her emotions, but does not defeat them; who is a caring, reliable friend that is supportive and positive in her relationships; who is courteous and loving to family, friends, and strangers; who works hard to achieve what she desires in her life, career, and love; and who faces each day and every obstacle with a smile.
