The SOL scores are converted to an HCPS grading scale. these converted scores are posted on HCPSLink. Should a student prefer, they may keep the current SOL converted score and count it as their exam grade. If not, they may opt to take the exam. The student then keeps the bettter of the two scores. Taking the final exam and not improving their score is NOT counted against them. Most students do not opt to take the regular Earth Science Final Exam. Earth Science Journals This is an ongoing-year long project in Earth Science class. Your composition notebook is used for you to make writing entries in. We refer to this as your "Journal". Very often in this class you are going to be required to demonstrate proper writing and communication skills by creating an essay that is written in your "Journal". All of the information, topics and rubrics will be given to you in an assignment. There is a certain format you must follow. Every so often, the teacher will check your "journal" and at the time it is checked, all entries must be current and complete and done correctly. A grade for this will be recorded in the gradebook. This "Journal" is a project grade which counts as a test grade. You should not fall behind on keeping your "journal" current. This project is an independent student responsibility. Typically the writing is done outside of class. If you have questions you may seek out Mr. Odell. Also, for assistance, you may attend the DRHS WRITING CENTER, which is offered during extended study, Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri in the English hall. MAKE-UP MONDAYS Mondays are designated as Make-up Work Days. Any student missing work, desiring help, needing re-assessment, re-taking tests, making up quizzes, making up an activity/lab or making up a test should report to Rm. 102 at 7:45 am for extra help. Coach Odell is not available for help in the afternoons due to his coaching responsibilities. Further assistance can also be had by setting up time in advance to receive help or coming to Rm 102 during extended study. Reminder: Monday mornings or extended study only!!!! Mr. Odell arrives at Deep Run HS at 7:30 most mornings. A STUDENT HAS 1 CALENDAR SCHOOL WEEK TO COMPLETE RE-TAKES AND MAKE-UPS !!!!! THIS IS A STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY. IT IS NOT THE JOB OF A TEACHER TO TRACK A STUDENT DOWN. IMPORTANT REMINDER: There is no such thing as re-take on quizzes. When you do poorly on a quiz in class you cannot re-take it for a better grade. The re-take policy only pertains to tests that are taken. And, if you desire to re-take a test you must have gottten less than 70% on it on the first attempt. It is not the teacher's responsibility to track a student down to re-take a test. That is solely a student responsibility. Re-takes must be completed within 1 calendar week. Science Project Class Honors Level Students-Block 5 Honors level students who will be participating in completing a science project are reminded that these classes start in September. End Of MP4 IMPORTANT REMINDER: There is no such thing as re-take on quizzes. STUDENT FAILURE / TEST RETAKES At Deep Run HS we want students to learn. Learning means being able to self direct yourself. That is the ultimate outcome desired. Learning means being able to retrieve information. It means being able to locate and utilize info in an efficient manner. It means being able to decipher info and breaking it down into components that allow students to solve problems and apply it to real-life situations. Learning is also the ability to retain and use information acquired from past experiences. At DRHS, students have the opportunity to retake tests and quizzes and lessons when the teacher deems it necessary. If a student has demonstrated marked work ethic and determination, but the retention is falling short, then work is allowed to be "re-learned", "re-mediated" or "re-done". A student should consult Mr. Odell in this situation. Or Mr. Odell may contact the student. A student is allowed the option of a test re-take whenever they record a grade of less than 70%. Simply re-taking a test does not ensure that a student will get a 100%. The "re-try" is averaged in with the previous score or is usually recorded as a grade of 70%. On a re-test, a student might get a new score of 90% but it will only be recorded as a 70%. Only failing grades qualify for a retake. These opportunities for students should not be taken lightly. Students are expected to perform at DR. But should a student falter, for one reason or another, a second chance may be granted. THOUGHT: "In life, there are no "do-overs". Choose wisely."

"Inc" in HCPS Link refers to the fact that the assignment has been posted by the teacher but either it has not been graded or it has not been recorded in the gradebook yet. The teacher does not record an "Inc". Only the computer records this. If you see an "Inc" it is not being averaged in the student's grade. The grade you see is the actual average that is on hand. 2. A grade of "0" means the student has not completed the assignment or is still working on it. They may have also been absent and may need to meet with the teacher to make up the work. This can be done before or after school or during Extended Study. It is the student's responsibility to arrange this make-up time. If the student has a zero, it is being averaged in. They have to get this rectified or the "0" remains constant.
