Regular Weekly Homework:

  • Every week, your child's homework is to practice math strategies to help with facts + and - through 20 with speed and accuracy for about 5 minutes.
  • Read your just right book for at least 15 minutes. If your book is long, you can keep it until you are finished.
  • Each week your child will be given a poem(s) to glue into his or her POEM TO GO HOME book. Your child should be spending part of the reading time reading from the POEM TO GO HOME book. You should sign each poem, when your child reads it fluently. If it is signed by you and your child memorizes it, a star is earned for the poem. If it is read with fluency, a smiley face is earned.
  • Your child should practice using the week's spelling words, so when they are used in a story, they will be spelled correctly. Your child will earn tickets for as many fun ways they practice their words.
  • Any reading done in preparation for the long term project counts toward your 15 minutes of reading.

    Purpose- practice, preparation or elaboration

Practice will be given when students are familiar with the content. It is important to assure the learning and retention of a concept. It is also through a great deal of practice that students can perform a skill with speed and accuracy. The purpose of preparation is two folded. First I may ask students to think and write about what they already know about a topic. Preparation is also used when students are asked to study for a test. Homework for elaboration is used when I ask students to extend their learning on a topic.

Parent’s Role-Your role with homework should be very minimal. For example: listen to your child read, keep time for an assignment, proofread a writing assignment with your child, ask question when studying for a subject, and provide encouragement. If your child is having difficulty with the assignment, please let me know. You shouldn’t need to reteach a skill. If more than 30 minutes is needed to finish homework, please send a note and I will give you another night.

Reading and math are the prime focus of homework. Please fill out reading log daily. When there is a special project, you will have 3 weeks or more to do it. Reading to find information for your projects can be part of nightly reading. To help students learn addition and subtraction facts to 20 please play math games and drill with flashcards. Five minutes on a regular basis can provide enough practice to improve recall of facts.

Thank you for your support!!! Together we can make a big difference in seeing that your child is successful in second grade and becomes a lifelong learner.
