Grade 4 Social Studies Course Outline

Alberta Education: Grade 4 social studies program of studies.

This outline should give you an idea as to how social studies in grade four should go this year.   Please click on the link above to view Alberta Education's Program of Studies for grade 4.

This year in grade 4 students will explore the geographic, cultural, linguistic, economic and historical characteristics that define quality of life in Alberta. They will appreciate how these characteristics reflect people’s interaction with the land and how physical geography and natural resources affect quality of life. Through this exploration, students will also examine how major events and people shaped the evolution of Alberta.

In order to meet the outcomes of the program of studies our social studies class will use the inquiry process to achieve the outcomes.  Our class will use the themes in our main resource as a springboard to conduct inquiries.  During the inquiry process students will complete a variety of tasks such as question and answer assignments, multimedia presentations, map reading, critical examinations of photos and videos, classroom discussions, research, group work, etc.

In order to finish the program our class will have to complete each theme in about 3 weeks.  I will condense as much of the material as I can in order to save time.  However, this is a heavy program and certain sections will likely be emphasized more than others.
