I am developing a mini unit on the holidays in Mexico for my 7th and 8th grade Spanish classes. I will use the Quia site to present the holidays of Mexico that are the most significant to Mexican culture. I will choose three holidays that occur throughout the year. This page will provide a supplement for the 7th and 8th grade curriculum. The 7th grade will use this in a guided practice situation and the 8th grade will use the site in an independent practice situation. The students will look at the following three holidays create a summary of each and then create comparison maps for a class discussion. I have created my unit in the form of a webquest. Introduction: Mexicans celebrate many holidays througout the year. Day of the Dead and Navidad are two holidays that resemble American holidays. This unit will help discover the rich culture and exciting activities of these two holidays. Resources: See website links at bottom of page. Task: You are traveling to Mexico to study for six months. During your time there would will celebrate two holidays:Days of the Dead and Navidad. Create three journal entries for each holiday describing what you have done to celebrate the holidays. Create a comparison and similarities chart for the holidays. Process: Activity 1: Read the two day of the dead web sites 1. What do Mexican people believe about death? 2. What did the indingenous people believe? 3. How are the days of the dead celebrated? November 1st and November 2nd 4. What are some of the common customs of days of the dead? Activity 2: Read the site on day of the dead food Describe the typical foods for day of the dead. Read the recipes site and copy down the recipes to try at the fiesta. Activity 3: Use the skeleton puppet site to make a Calavara. Activity 4: Read the three Navidad websites. 1. Describe the holiday that comes before Navidad. 2. What is a pinata? 3. When do children receive their gifts? Why? What do they do? 4. What are some current traditions in Mexico? Why? 5. Would you have class as a student study in Mexico? Act. 5: Read the website on food for Navidad. Describe a typical meal for Nochevieja and Las Posadas. Act. 6: Read the pinata website. Create a pinata for the fiesta. Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on 1. Cooperative skills. 2. Research skills. 3. Journal Entries and Comparison Conclusion: This webquest will provide the students with a comprehensive look at two important Mexican holidays.
