GOAL: Students will complete the following: a pre-reading kwl, a main idea fish overhead, and finally, an index card main idea and author's purpose summary.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

PRE-READING

Students (AS A CLASS) will create a PRE-READING KWL for each topic listed below.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

NON-FICTION READING ACTIVITY

1. Students will READ THE ONLINE ARTICLE (WITH TABLE PARTNER) and determine its main idea.

2. Students will WRITE THE MAIN IDEA in a simple sentence along the spine of their 'FISH' overhead.

3. Students will WRITE SUPPORTING EVIDENCE along the ribs of their 'FISH.'

4. Students will bring their 'FISH' to the overhead machine and will REPORT their findings to the class.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

POST-WRITING ACTIVITY

1. Students will write ON AN INDEX CARD a paragraph that includes a sentence summarizing the main idea and supporting sentences explaining the evidence found.

2. After a class discussion, students will write on the back of their card, the AUTHOR'S PURPOSE and a ONE WORD TOPIC for their online article.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

POST-CLASS DISCUSSION Students will review their KWL and will determine whether they answered any of their questions and will document any unique information learned.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADE

1. Students will turn in both the index card and the KWL chart for each article completed.

2. Repeat the above steps and continue to article number 2.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HOW WILL YOU KNOW THAT YOU HAVE MASTERED THIS SKILL?

At a later date, you will take a test that demonstrates mastery of this important benchmark. It will require that you identify the main idea of an online article along with evidence that supports your main idea sentence.
