French III -- Weekly Journals
(printemps 2005)
Mes Chers Amis,
Starting soon you will be asked to submit journal entries on a weekly basis.
The journal entries will be due every Wednesday unless otherwise noted. Refer to the
dates below.
WHAT?
Each week you need to submit two entries. You may write about whatever topic you choose. It
is my hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to practice the structures we cover in
class; especially those that you find difficult.
Could you define entry?
At a bare minimum, an entry is a paragraph on your chosen topic. There is no maximum length.
For the composition books I provide, most entries are approximately 1 to 1 1/2 pages in length.
Should we skip spaces when we write our entries?
Oui!, s'il vous plaît.
How do we get graded on these?
Glad you asked. What you turn in each week is worth 20 points. As long as you turn in your two
entries on time every week, and continue to challenge yourself (that means show me that you
are capable of writing at a level beyond what French I and French II students could easily do)
then you will receive your 20 points. If you turn in all of your entries on time you receive a grade
of 100%. This will count as a test score.
What happens if I turn in my journal late?
There is a five point penalty (out of twenty) for each day that your journal is late. If it is one day
late, then your highest possible score will be 15 out of 20. Two days late: 10/20. Three days
late: 5/20. after that: 0/20. Your test grade will be determined by dividing the points you’ve
accumulated by the maximum possible number of points that quarter.
N.B. If you know in advance that you will not be in class on a day that journals are due, you are
still responsible for turning in your entries on time. Likewise, if you are in school on a due date
but not in French class on that day (for example; college recruiting, guidance appointment, etc.).
Why are we doing this?
The purpose of this is simply to improve your French skills. It’s unbelievable how much writing
can help you to become more familiar with a language. After becoming more familiar with the
French language it is my hope that you will feel more comfortable using it in conversation.
Bonne Chance!!
