Developped by Rebecca Stiles (rclstiles@YAHOO.COM) Here is the recent web quest I did with my French I and II students. I did this about a month ago so I don't know if these sites are still valid. Please check them before you do this activity. Hope you like it! *************************Découvrons l'EURO! 1. Read this article from USA Today to answer the following questions: http://www.usatoday.com/money/world/2001-12-31-euromance.htm a. What is "Euro Shock"? b. What are Euro coins called? Are the French using the same word? c. What motto used to appear on each French coin? 2. Use this site to answer the following questions: http://www.euro.gov.uk/ a. What is the last date that French people can use the Franc in stores? b. What is the last date that French people can exchange the Franc in banks? c. What denominations do the Euro bank notes come in? d. What denominations do the Euro coins come in? e. Pick one Euro note and describe it in detail. f. What are the coins like? How are they different from the notes? g. Why do you think the Euro notes don't have people on them? h. What are some security features of the notes? (Mention at least two.) 3. Use this currency converter to make the following conversions: http://www.xe.com/ucc/ a. You have travelled to France with $250.00. How many Euros will you have? b. How many Francs would you have had with $250.00? c. A French person has 500 Francs. How many Euros do they have? 4. Go to the site http://www.dromadaire.com/fr On the left side of the screen click on the icon that says "Le Franc est Mort, Vive l'Euro!" Play the game "Le Just'Euro" where you must guess the price of various objects. Don't forget that a Euro is approximately the same as a dollar. Also remember that europeans will use a comma where we use a decimal point. 2, 53 euros = 2 euros and 53 cents. 2.300,42 euros = 2 thousand 3 hundred euros and 42 cents. As you are playing write down 4 objects and how much they will cost in Euros. 5. On the same site with the Just'Euro game, find a list of countries participating in the Euro. Copy that list here. 6. Do you know what the European Flag looks like? Try to find a picture of it on one of the sites you've been looking at. Describe it here.
