Figurative Language Simile- a comparison using like or as, usually comparing two dissimilar objects. His feet were as big as boats. Metaphor- states that one thing is something else. It is a comparison, but it does NOT use like or as to make the comparison. Her hair is silk. The sentence is comparing(or stating) that hair is silk. Hyperbole- exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally. I almost died, it was so funny. Figurative Language adds to description by helping the reader see things in a new way. The reader can visualize what is happening in a story or poem with figurative language. It usually makes description richer and clearer. Expressions, however, can be overused. The simile "big as a house" is no longer interesting because it has been used so often. Such expressions are often cliches.
