Correspondence Project

This project is intended to review the difference between friendly and business letter formats.  In addition, it will give you writing practice in the form of several different writing prompts.

Guidelines
* Complete 5 letters (3 business and 2 friendly)
* All projects must contain the 2 required prompts and 3 additional prompts of your choice
* Avoid spelling and grammatical errors
* Use correct letter format and original material
* Projects must by typed
* Turn in all 5 letters together by October 7th
* No late collections will be accepted
* Extra credit will be given for projects received by September 23rd
* You must complete all 5 assignments to receive credit

Required Prompts – Complete Both

· Write a letter in response to a job opening posted in the paper.  Tape the advertisement to the back of the letter (for my purposes only - you wouldn't do that for a real application.)  Within reason, you may advance yourself in terms of age and experience for this exercise.  Use business letter format.

. Write a letter from one character to another.  The characters must originate from material covered in Unit One of this course.  For example, what might a letter from Elizabeth Proctor say to Abigail Williams?  Include detail and context.  This may be business or friendly letter format, depending on the tone and purpose of the letter.

Additional Prompt Options – Complete Any Three

· Two months ago you ordered a year’s subscription to a magazine and enclosed a check for twelve dollars.  You have received no response and no magazines.  Write a letter to the magazine explaining the problem and saying what you would like the magazine to do.

· You have received an overdue notice from the library regarding a book that you know you returned.  Write a polite letter explaining the error and what you would like done to correct it.

· Write a letter to the principal of this school and tell him of a pressing problem facing the school.  Explain what you think should be done about it.

· A relative has just sent you a gift that you have always dreamed of receiving.  Write a thank-you letter telling the relative how much you appreciate the gift, why you like it so much, and how you will make use of it.

· Write a letter to a family with whom you spent a weekend not long ago.  Thank them for their hospitality and tell them why you had such a good time.  You may choose to address this to a hotel or resort instead of a family.

· Write to a friend who used to live in your neighborhood or go to your school.  Tell him or her about things that have happened or changed since you last saw each other. (This can be a real, or fictional, person.)

· Write a letter to the editor in response to a recent editoral page feature.  For my reference, include the newspaper item with the letter.

· Write a thank you letter to a potential employer from a prospective employee.  This should be a follow up to an interview.  Thank the interviewer for their time and express an interest in the position opening.

· Write a letter of apology to someone.  Explain your actions and reasoning for making the apology.  Do not use sarcasm.

· Write a cover letter for a scholarship application.  Include information about yourself.  Make this realistic.  You may be able to use it in the near future.

· Write a letter to the younger you.  What would teenage you say to you at age six?  Offer advice, warnings, or insight.

· Write a letter to a person that has made a difference in your life.   Specifically state what the person did that impacted you.

FYI  - The optional prompts aren’t labeled as “business” or “friendly.”  I’d like you to select the format that you think is most appropriate for the task.  If you are uncertain, feel free to check with me before proceeding.
