FL401 webpage
WELCOME! YOOKOSO! WILLKOMMEN! BIENVENUS! BIENVENIDOS!
Dear students,
Welcome to the webpage of World Languages and Cross-Cultural Training!
During this semester and thanks to your FL 401 class, you will experience other languages of the world. You may at this moment wonder why this class is a requirement. Many of you may not see the use of learning another language but as you know more about Japanese, German, French and Spanish, you will realize that learning a language is much more than just communicating. A language is the reflection of the way of living, the beliefs, the culture of the people who speak it.
Business is conducted by the people and the future of any country in a global economy will lie with the people who can effectively think and act across ethnic, cultural and language barriers. We need to understand that the differences between nations and cultures is profound. The European-based culture of the United States has very different values and behaviors than other cultures in the world. Accepting and adapting to those differences is imperative to succeed. We will only be successful when we recognize that the key is operating with sensitivity toward the culture and communication of the other country.
Come and get an insight to Japanese, German, French and Hispanic cultures!
During the semester, you will have to memorize four dialogues for your Oral Proficiency Test. For each language, the four dialogues are exactly the same. We highly recommend that you print out these dialogues in order to follow us as you listen to the tapes (see your instructor for details). Here are the English versions of these dialogues:
